P990i Vodafone (UK) firmware |

Like everyone else I have a lightly branded (just startup screen logo) Voda
which came with firmware:
Phone: R5A006
Bluetooth: R4F01
Organiser: R3A04
It doesn't find any updates, although we know from these forums that unbranded phones can get R7A001.
I phoned Vodafone. It took a long, long time to find someone who knew what I was talking about - 'firmware? phone ware? what?' - but I got there in the end. The lady I was speaking to was going to and fro with some technical dept.
I was told that they do have newer software - she wouldn't confirm the version - as 'we're getting new stock every day which all have newest software on' but that they currently don't have a way to distribute this new firmware to existing customers.
It didn't sound like they were expecting a distribution method to appear shortly, otherwise she'd have fobbed me off with 'keep checking, it'll appear in the next couple of weeks'.
Instead, she offered to send me a replacement handset. I pointed out that I only received my P990 this week, but she was determined that all new stock has newer software on it and that it would be better.
So I wait for Monday with baited breath.
I highly suspect I'll land up with exactly the same as I've got now.
My fear is that I'll get something that is heavier-Vodafone-branded than the light branding I have now. But if this comes with a higher organiser version then I suspect that when (eventually) they put some updates online then these will increase the branding too.
As to be expected I have to box-up and hand my existing P990 to the courier so I won't be able to check which version the new one is before deciding which one to keep.
She also said, earlier on in the call, that installing the standard SE firmware would void my warranty. This suggests that its possible to do this, but she wasn't going to tell me and noone on these forums has been able to do it.

I took mine into Vodafone yesterday because I was sick to death of it restarting every hour and constantly freezing. The woman who dealt with me said they'd had brand new stock that day, so I got a new handset. The firmware is all exactly as you quoted but the phone is like a completely different machine.
Its fast, hasnt reset once in over 24 hours and everything actually works.
Touch wood this is the phone that the P990i always should have been and I am really impressed. That impressed that I dont think I'll even bother upgrading the firmware if Vodafone do release a new version. As I work in IT support, I'm a firm believer in "If it aint broke - dont fix it"

So out of curiosity what is the latest version of firmware for these recent phones and are they more branded than the start up and shutdown red vodafone screens of P990s when they first came out on vodafone?

my firmware is,
phone- cxc162037 r5a006
bluethooth- cxc62058 r4f01
organizer- cxc162036 r3a04
cda- cda162008/91 r2a04
My vodafone i got today only has the vodafone start up and shut down branding! Vodafone dont seem to brand their phones much. orange are the ones that like to mess things up with their rubbish branding!

Ah its the same firmware as mine and I got the phone when it came out. So no new firmware since released on vodafone. Good to know.
@ Mattd: Strange you think its fast and I think its slow.

tboy2000,
The initial handset I had (which was exactly the same firmware as my new one) was shocking. Very unstable, very slow.
The new one is awesome. No idea why, it just is??? |

The main problem I have is stability when using the web (Opera). Its very crashy in general use.
If you try to do something else - e.g. view an SMS - the browser will crash.
Plus the phone often likes to 'restart to improve performance'. Others have said that this happens when its low on memory, and due to general memory leaks in the system this can happen when you're not using the phone and its in your pocket. It will restart, ask for your PIN, you will not notice and will not receive any calls/SMSes.
Other than these stability issues (and slow slidy menu animation) its pretty damn good, but these problems have been reported fixed by people in the later SE firmwares, and I'd like these fixes.
@matty_d: when did you get your first handset and where from?
Can you use Opera a bit and see how stable it is - browse gizmodo.com and open some links in tabs ('new window'). Then try to flick to read SMS messages.

VF store here in Cardiff told me that they could do a firmware upgrade but would need to send phone away for 3 working days to do so. The concern is that they did not have any information on the issues to assure me that the upgrade would improve performance - .i.e. VF had done sufficient testing before going to a new version |

I bought a P990 from mobileshop last week for £90 (£30 per month for 12 month O2 contract 250 mins+100 sms). I thought it was a good deal, given the other prices I had been looking at over the last few weeks.
Although I love the phone (once I had got used to the changes from the P910i) it is absolutely useless as it crashes and freezes all the time. I have had to take the battery out so many times to re-start it that it seems likely that the battery compartment lid will break before long if it goes on like this.)
I found, to my surprise, when I switched the phone on for the first time that it was vodafone branded. When I try to upgrade the software it tells me I have the latest version (Phone R5A006, BT R4F01, Org R3A04, CDA R2A04). Having read this thread it looks as if I've been sold a pup. I want to keep the P990 but should I insist on a non-Voda branded one? Will that be better?

jsheerin..i would personally demand a p990 with no branding whatsoever. They've been cheeky to sell you a voda branded one on an o2 contract.

@jsheerin: Thats wierd. You have what was meant to be a 'Vodafone' handset. The phone knows it is Vodafone hence the updates destined for 'vanilla' phones won't apply. They are network unlocked - mine is using my old O2 SIM until my number port is complete. Looks like the shop is up to something dodgy - I don't know how they have had a handset from Vodafone (who subsidise the cost against contract revenue) which they are able to sell on without a Voda contract. They probably bent the normal rules to guarantee a sale because of O2 handset unavailability.
Quite often O2 provide completely unbranded, vanilla phones which are better because you can update with the generic firmware from SE as soon as it comes out, no need to wait for the network to release a 'branded' version (the point of this thread
Other posts on this forum suggest that the O2 phones won't be available for a week or so. If I were you I'd phone up the shop ASAP (within 14 days you have more leverage, just in case they are difficult) and tell them you've received a Voda model by mistake. They may well tell you they don't have any O2 models in stock, but you should insist that they send you one when they do.
Phone them again a week later, or whenever posts on this forum indicate that O2 stock is out and about, to make sure they haven't forgotten to send your replacement. You won't be a high priority
