I got my second reply from orange on tuesday and have send this back to them, i have also emaild the ex email addres and hopping for a reply, also emailed SE this evening too :
Thank you for your reply and I would like to be advised when a firmware flash is avaiable to rectify the problems listed and where I can obtain it from, also I would like to ask if your intending to do anything about the battry life. On the Sony Ericsson website they state that the phone has a maxium life off 300 hours on any GSM network I have about 2 days useage out of my phone after having it for 3 weeks now and I have been following all the recommended charging prociduers from sony for this phone and battry.
I would also like to know where my nearest sony ericsson service center is so that I can take the phone there if needed
Thanks in advance
Jody Farenden

Subject: RE: Case 1215053 Technical Query
Dear Jody
Thank you for your mail Regarding the K700i.
I would like to advise you that it would appear that Orange have reduced some functionality of this phone which has been escalated to an area in technical support that deal solely with handset designs.
WE are investigating this to determine why this function was removed and if it will be restored in the near future.
I apologise for any inconvenience and trust this information is helpful to you.
Kind regards
Dave

I have contacted Sony Ericsson on this matter and they assure me that the handset in question dose have the short cut menu, so I wish to know why Orange have decided to remove and not support option as all the other major network providers have enabled this function. In my opinion you have removed one of the most important features on the phone an I would like to see you either release a software patch/upgrade to rectify the issues with this handset (and so would many other users of the K700i), also I would like to point out that you should have initiated a recall for the misprinted manual's as this leads your customers like myself and many of the users of http://www.www.esato.com to believe that you are not committed to serving your customers, and just want our money, if so please let me know and I will purchase my K700i from another network and also take my contract there (I don't think they will mind providing me with an unbranded K700i that operates as the manufacturer intended it to)
I await your reply

Is anybody else here worried that Orange will do the same to the eagerly awaited S700?
I have to admit, that although they have their faults, I like the customer service of orange compared to other networks, but if they totally screw up the S700, I, along with many other Orange customers will start to look elsewhere. So c'mon, if anyone from Orange is reading this, please dont screw around with the S700!!!
Maybe we should all start emailing Orange and ask them not to do this? |

Thank you for your response to my enquiry. Whilst not being satisfied with the product Orange has supplied I'm grateful for your concise answers. If I were able to have my phone re-flashed with SE's original software I would do so, however it seems that Orange have even prevented this by locking the phone against it.
As orange has failed to provide a handset which works in the way it was intended to do so be SE, perhaps you could tell me how I can resolve this. Having upgraded my phone I am now tied into another twelve month contract. The retailer (Carphone Warehouse) would not stand by Orange's 7/14 day money back policy and your customer services were obviously unable to provide a fully functioning replacement handset. You should by now be aware that there are many dissatisfied K700i/Orange customers out there due to this issue. You should also be aware that by continuing this policy of removing functionality from handsets, both Orange and Sony Ericsson will lose customers:

I cc'd the address CPW provide for Ericsson but this failed. Anyone have a good email address for someone at ericsson who might actually care? |

Nothing yet.
I would be very supprised if either company will relent on this issue, although it would be nice!
If they dont, there are ways around the branding, search the forums for more info. Involves getting the phone unlocked then flashed to a different firmware...

Yeah i spoke to SE about this place. Basically you send your phone off with proof of purchase, name and adress etc and they will allegedley reflash the phone. However if Orange have locked it will it work, will it crash the phone? It will definitly void any possible recompense from Orange.
Who is willing to give it a go? |

Please can you elaborate on the unlocking or provide a link? I've seen lots about re-flashing but nothing on how to unlock the orange firmware to allow it.

Ok, So far ive been just reading all about the problems on the K700i on Orange and I do have a Orange k700i my self.
I do like the phone alot and I also like orange better than all the other networks. The missing shortcuts which i think everyone has been complaining about is very upsetting and comfusing why Orange has even removed them. I can sort of live with it, But i do feel for the rest of you and are also doing my little bit as Its something i feel strongly about that they should leave the software alone
I have contact Orange now with several emails and letters regarding the firmware and problem. i have also contacted SE who at present deny that there is problems with the K700i and just refer me back to Orange.
I have since wrote another letter asking orange to make a further ammendments to pages 12-14-18 as Displaying the wrong Picture in the phone is misleading and is displaying to the customer is able to feature that its not. As i have also not received any ammendments in my phone manual regarding the feature taken out, I have paid for a new product and only received a 2nd user phone that has been tampered with. This im sure is in breach of some sort.
Orange new well what they was doing with the phone and therefore the manual should have been correct or even had a ammendment notes already inserted into the book.
This has all been done at a last min and the person who thought of the idea should be sacked or to be made to answer to the public.
I suppose its not as bad as voda thats takes the mp3 functoion of all together (well you can use vodas own mps)
Another place where we can always complain and if enough does it that whos knows, is BBC Wathdog.

Hope this helps.

i got this back from SE a few days ago ..... nothing back from orange as of yet :

Dear Mr. Farenden,
Thank you for contacting the Sony Ericsson Call Centre.
With regards to your enquiry, we don't have a service location in the Enfield area, the nearest one to you is in Barnet or Tottenham in north London:-
Intec Cellular Services
50 Moxon Street
Barnet
Hertfordshire
EN5 5TS
0208 216 2457
R's Electrics
815-817 High Road
Tottenham
London
N17 8ER
020 8808 1498
Alternatively, you can send your phone to our main service location to be repaired:-
Hays Technology
Unit 2a Appletree Road
Chipping Warden
Banbury
Oxfordshire
OX17 1LL
01295 662101
You will need to send, with your phone, a proof of purchase, a description of the problems, and your contact details.
I would advise you to contact the service location prior to sending or dropping in for repairs.
Regarding the softkey acting as a second camera button, this is a design part of the Orange customisation. It is not possible to change the shortcut softkey as an Orange branded phone, and I cannot comment on whether Orange is considering changing the menu and shortcut features.
Should you require any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us again for further help and support.

Just as a suggestion... it may be worth sending "The Register" comments on their review here:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/[....]06/sony_ericsson_k700i_review/
They might actually be able to embaress Orange into a response if they realise the depth of feeling about what's been done.

Received the following from Orange today after sending a long and criticial mail to their Exec dept:
Quote:
| Dear Andrew
Thank you for your mail regarding several issues.
I am sorry to learn you are unhappy with the upgrade options available to you and the nature of the new connection offer packages and would like to advise, all upgrade offers are individually determined and are therefore based at least in part on a customer's history with Orange.
Whilst the new connection offers are aimed at attracting new customers in an increasingly competitive marketplace.
You are correct when you say retaining existing customers is very important, but it is also important to attract new customers in order to increase and maintain one's customer base.
Your comments regarding the handset manual have been fedback to the relevant team in order that action can be taken, however I am unable to advise you at this time of the reasons why the set of the K700i where changed in the manner they have been other than it was a business decision.
Regarding response from The Correspondence Team, this team only deals with issues raised directly by the customer to them, all of the queries you have raised would be dealt with by other teams and therefore the information would have and has been passed to the appropriate team for their reference and investigation.
I trust my response addresses your query. If you have any further questions please call Customer Services on 150 from your Orange phone or 07973 100150 from any other phone. Our Helpdesk is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and any of our representatives will be pleased to assist you.
I am sorry we are unable to offer any further assistance regarding this issue by email.
Kind regards
John
