W950 always did support WMA, it was the one thing it did that m600 and p990 didn't do

Is it legal? I dont want to loose my warranty

if you change CDA you lose the warranty.

If you change the CDA back you'll get back your warranty as nobody will ever know!

The W950i has always spported WMV files as well. I'm surprised to hear that SE has added those features (i.e. WMA and WMV support) to the P990i as I thought they were one of the things that made it a "Walkman" phone as compared to a "business" phone. Oh well.

@OfficeMaven,

W950i supports MP3/AAC/MPEG4 files (as per technical spec), it can also play wma files as I found out today (also, divx files with divx player!). However, I have never been able to play WMV (windows media video) files, it's still unable to play with the latest firmware.

Please prove me (us!) wrong by testing some wmv files, I have tested several wmv files today, but none of them play, get error message - "there is a problem opening the file. try again?" !!!

I have the MMR-60 transmitter and i was hoping that this firmware release would give some support to that thing. I guess it still doesnt work..

Keep my fingers crossed for the next firmware update. I kinda confused on why the W958i, the chinese version supports that MMR-60 and not the original W950i.....

@MasterMoo

Please take a look at this topic I created waaay back in mid November of 2006:

http://www.esato.com/board/viewtopic.php?topic=135610

As you can see in the second post, I was indeed able to get WMV files to play on my W950, but the quality sucked and so did the resolution.

I haven't tried repeating this with the last two firmware versions, but suffice it to say that the W950 has indeed always been able to play WMV files (as I believe the specs for the phone state). It's too bad that it doesn't work well/properly.

Yes... Take a look at the "Technical data" section of the W950i's user guide and you'll see that it clearly states that the phone supports the WMV and WMA formats:

http://www.sonyericsson.com/downloads/W950i__UG_R2a_AE.pdf

I hope this helps some.

@OfficeMaven,

Thanks for the info.

Reading your previous post seems to indicate the same problem I am having when trying to open a wmv file, you got around this by doing some conversion i.e. changing the resolution to 208x160 to get it to open in the video player.
You've said it yourself - "not sure why they claim that WMV is supported when it really isn't???" and I agree with that statement.

It also states in the technical data that Real Media files (.ram, .rm) are supported - what a load of cr*p, W950i can't play any real media files, period !!!

Sorry to sound negative, but this is the reality, I was really excited when ares stated that they are supported (wma, wmv) in P990i.

PS - wma sounds great, much louder than mp3 !!

Hi Guys,

I have an Orange branded W950i - I have been trying to update the thing for months now, every time I try it tells me I have the 'latest firmware'.

I just checked the wiki page detailing the historic CDA releases, it seems that the one my phone currently has installed is the oldest!!! Details are as follows:

PDA: CXC 162088 R1B01
Phone: CXC 162037 R9C001

CDA: 162017/2 R1A21

Any ideas why it won't let me update to the newest version?? I find the phone a complete pain in the ass to use, keeps crashing etc. very much regret not getting a nokia. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks

are you sure your cda is /2 ? isn't it /12 or /22 or something? you said it's orange branded so it shouldn't be /2

@rahulus

Do a search for Kulan Kendi, change your CDA to generic world 1 and reflash using SEUS and hey presto!!
