Apparently the W950's video player supports WMV files. However, I can't get it to play a single one no matter what settings I try. Has anyone successfully played a WMV on their W950?

Finally got a WMV file to play... I had to make it 208x160 resolution in order to get it to open in the video player. However, it plays real choppy and the audio is horrible (i.e. it's worthless for watching). Looks like SE has some work to do on this still. Not sure why they claim that WMV is supported when it really isn't??? Oy!

Hoping that one day will have a phone that plays all types of video formats with different sizes supported too....

Well, I thought I found a solution... I decided that I'd just convert my videos into MP4 format instead. I tested it with a few 3 minute long clips and it worked great. The video looks spectaculair and the sound is great. However, any time I try to open a longer video on the phone (e.g. a 40 minute TV show, DVD, etc.), I get an error message on the phone telling me that it failed to open the file.

Man! SE really did a poor job with the video viewer app on this phone (I assume that it's the same on the M600 and P990 as well). Maybe they'll get it fixed in a future firmware update, but I'm not holding my breath.

For those of you considering one of SE's Symbian UIQ3-based phones, and want to be able to play DVD or TV shows on it, I'd definitely take this into consideration (i.e. THE VIDEO APP DOESN'T WORK WORTH BEANS!).

Maybe I'll try 3GPP formatted videos and see if they're any better. Oy!

PeterKay,

I don't be lieve that the P990 can even play WMV files so it's not even in the same ball park. Also, from what I've been reading here and over on the MySymbian forums, the P990 (as well as the M600) is having just as much problems with its video player and MP4 & 3GP video files. I am glad to hear that you've got yours working. Care to share the secret?

I was simply hoping that since SE claims that the W950 would play WMV formatted files, that I would have better luck with them instead of the other formats. Guess I was wrong.

maciekish,

Will do. rThanks for the offer.

i dont experience any video problems with my p990
i use super converter and settings 728kbps video 320-240@25fps and audio 48000khz128kbps.. it is perfect.. super quality and sound.. and a 400-500mb movie takes about 25-30 seconds to launch..

Hi All,

Okay, I've finally figured it out... Well, not for WMV files, but for MP4 files anyway.

I'm now able to create 768 kbps MPEG4 videos with really nice stereo AAC sound that play just fine on my W950. Even large 400+ MB files load up within 3-4 seconds (compared with the 30 to 120 seconds that other solutions take), and the phone's video information screen actually works now (couldn't get that to work with any other solution), as does being able to skip forwards and backwards through the video without crashing the phone or taking forever to do so.

The trick was to use Sony's very own MP4 conversion codecs (i.e. the "Sony MP4 Shared Library"). I'm not exactly sure what Sony is doing to the videos that others don't/can't, but out of the dozens of video conversion apps I've now tried, it's the ONLY one that really works properly. The resulting MP4 video looks and sounds great on the phone (the quality blows away my Dell X51v so much so that it's not even funny). While the Sony converter doesn't work directly with DVDs (you have to convert them to MPGs first - which is no real big deal), it does work really well with Windows Media Center Recorded TV shows (i.e. DVD-MS files) and that's what I was really after.

This phone just keeps getting better and better...

Yes and ...

I did tried to look for it but come up with the same result as you.

So. Any hints where to find this and how it works. Is it an own application or codecs to be used with other softwares.
