Why is everyone so excited about Paris? Its the same old hardware just in a slider? No more exciting than the G900.

Regardless to the old hardware (still not confirmed) I'm still existed about the new finger touch oriented UIQ 3.3 on Paris and how it will work
I'm not curious about numbers and specs as long as my phone works smooth and stable
I have seen the modified UIQ on G900 and it was really nice

I've been a buyer ever since the amazing T68, jumping ship from Nokia whose phones at the time weren't particularly innovative or stable.
The T68 was one of the first colour screen mobiles on the market, had a detachable camera, was stable and one hell of a phone (for the time).
I then bought the P900i and was again amazed at the features of the phone and the ability to install great software on it. Sure I came from a Psion 3 and 5 background, so Symbian seemed a logical choice and UIQ was cool too.
I eagerly awaited the P990i and was so disappointed by the numerous delays, technical re-spec of the device and bugs in UIQ3/Sybian 9 that I skipped that one.
The P1i seemed like a stable smartphone in a good form factor but I stopped myself from buying that because (a) it was a rehashed P990i in a different size but more stable and (b) there were rumours floating of a replacement in the wings.
So far I and others have waited for November last year, February this year, April, May ... June anyone? All for an official announcement of the next great UIQ flagship.
Back in early May 2007 we were treated to news of the P1i, so one year later and counting where's it's successor?
I appreciate that you need the volume business to be able to fund the R&D to be able to produce a flagship phone, so understand the need to get UIQ out to the mid-range handsets, get the average punter used to UIQ and wanting more to build up the install base.
However it worries me that while UIQ3 and Symbian 9 may have moved on, we're yet to see a capable hardware platform from on which to run it.
Essentially we're getting on for 3 years since the P990 was announced - 3 years for technology to move on, CPU's to advance, screens to improve, battery life to be extended and not forgetting competitors to catch up.
People may criticise Nokia for pumping out a load of phones, but the publics perception and their marketing count for a lot.
Then we have Apple coming to the market late and trading on the iPod brand, slick marketing and an even slicker UI.
As someone here has already mentioned, if do have something spectacular hidden away they're going to face a marketing problem against Apple with the 3G iPhone. Launch it now, go for a marketing blitz and win some hearts and minds or wait a few months until after the new iPhone hype has died down.
Unfortunately has traditionally suffered major delays between announcing a phone and availability of the phone. Sure they're not alone, but Apple seem to be changing the rules ... announce and ship within a month.
Both and Nokia seem to need the time to finish off the product, enhance the hardware, fix the bugs in the software and ramp up production.
This doesn't bode well for getting any uber device soon. I'd expect any announcement to be made in August (post 3G iPhone launch) with shipping to arrive around November.
While I'd like to stay with it's been nearly 3 years since my P900 died and I've been very disappointed with the offerings so far.
Frankly if Apple stop the stupid restriction of tying the phone down to only one network then it's going to be very difficult to see why I should stay with
Brand loyalty is hard to obtain and sadly seem to have been doing very little to appease/keep the devotees to the P Series and UIQ.
I fear this year is make or break for them in the high end market and UIQ but by God I hope I'm wrong. |

@Jayce
Spot on there mate!
SE has completely lost the plot and now fast losing its supporters/fans than gaining new ones. I've been with SE since the Ericsson days until this year and Esato has shifted its allegiance from adoring SE to being disappointed so much that a number have left and others are considering it. Personally I think SE's time is almost run out, you're right they have this year to do something about it but the year is almost half way and they've nothing to show for.
The rumours (yes, they're still rumours) emanating regarding them "giving" up on UIQ and the purpoted specs of Paris aren't pleasing at all. Couple that with the delay of the X1 and you've got a recipe for total disaster.
I never thought I'd be happy with another brand but my motorola V8 is absolutely fabulous, no complaints from me. Of course I still have my beloved P910i- coincidentally the only SE that's left after owning the T610i, F500i and the K700i- and that is the last of the best of SE. The P990i would've been their last best had it been released in time and without the bugs it had. I'm in the market for a phone for my second line (P910i) which should be a smartphone and was going for the X1 until it was "delayed"
now I'm looking at either Motorola (for UIQ) or Nokia. My first love has always been UIQ but loved the X1 so much that I was willing to try Windows even though I'm still not a fan of the OS on a mobile.
Unfortunately we still have people who accept the mediocrity that SE has become. Look at their products since then, the K850, W960, W580/S500, etc, if it is not the crappy build quality or the same old tired and abused hardware it is software that keeps needing upgrade that never comes from SE while other brands keep improving all the time and bring updated and relevant software. How in the world did LG and Samsung become better than SE?
I know I bought a Moto that is troubled and may or may not pull through but at least I'm happy with it. In fact, SE is looking like a good candidate to follow Motorola as they are still stuck with a 3 year technology and don't seem to want to learn/ improve.
How I long for the old Sony Ericsson that was way ahead of every manufacturer out there. The old SE that made the now tevhnologically advanced Nokia seem hopeless.

Ah, woe are us! Poor old SE, they might as well close the shutters and go home!
Hopefully I can buy a G900i (is anyone selling this in the UK?) before they do and I for one think that's going to sell like hot-cakes. I'm still very interested to see what follows. So they've pitched Paris as a sensible feature phone at an affordable price rather than a high-tech god, but I can't help but think they've kept something a little more exciting up their sleves.
Something tells me that my G900i will be replaced by an SE phone that isn't the X1. In the meantime the feature seakers can run off to buy whichever phone they like. Hopefully they can leave the others here to discuss SE's future portfolio.
Where's this video then? It's time someone knocked a hole in that leak-proof pipe.

Hey guys. You know what i think? SERIOUSLY, if SE could just MODIFY the damn japan-only phones and sell it all over the world, i can safely say that within a few WEEKS Nokia will be totally out of business. agree?

No mate, not when I look at the phones my friends buy. If I were faced with the DoCoMo "any phone you like, but they all do an look the same" I'd be screaming for a different formfactor, whichever features were missing.
Take those camera features and put them in a cybershot and maybe it'd sell, but then many of the DoCoMo phone companies also sell in Europe and none of them have bought one of these things over. They can't all be stupid. These companies are starting to pull away from DoCoMo, which makes me wonder if they're really working from a business point of view Japan either. |

they arent working from a business perspective (which is a horrible way to make money ... you cannot have bean counters telling engineers what to do, you get this "compromise" that leaves with bright ideas in the case of MDiscs for example of not being able to digitally copy MDs from one another buy you can digitally copy CDs ... which one do you think would be better for the record industry?), its purely the carriers (DoCoMo/KDDI) and they tell the manufacturers what they require in their line up of phones and by when ... and they all comply. however the production runs are far less than a global release
so906i isnt going to be produced as much as the k850i. |

I don't think any of us want to go bust, however when you read headlines like:
"Sony Ericsson losing ground
Revenue and profit down, as expected"
source: http://www.rcrnews.com/apps/p[....]e?AID=/20080423/FREE/819856867
Then yup, some people are worried.
Especially when they start being likened as the next Motorola, which trust me isn't a flattering complement, just look at the RAZR as an example:
"Why the RAZR is killing Motorola"
http://www.mobilegazette.com/[....]-killing-motorola-07x05x16.htm
Funnily enough this business is very competitive and you not only need a good product portfolio that appeals to the broad range of people, but you need to demonstrate leading edge technology which will eventually filter down to the mid-range segments.
Right now we see plenty of low and mid-range phones appearing but nothing high-end (X1 aside, which isn't truly a designed piece of hardware).
While I appreciate the need to grow the low and mid-range, without a high end phone or phones the mid-range is going to get stale in 18 months and then where will you be looking for your next phone? |
