Specs for the most part look pretty good.

But for a phone that's pushing multimedia usage and camera usage.. the slim batter capacity is a real bummer. I didn't think they'd be that crazy but I guess they just didn't have the room in there?

Even with stamina mode and batter saver features. You can't create power out of nothing..

I was tempted til I saw that. Killed my new phone boner instantly

Posted by nikola1970
Everything seems good beside that ridiculous battery. They didn't have room? Lol, no shit. How Mate 20 Pro in smaller body had the room for 4200 battery?

But ok, let's see it in real world usage. It's nice looking phone though.

In reality it will probably do pretty well. But they should have added 4200mah just to blow it out of the water.. go big or go home. It's like they went to climb up to the summit and decided to stop 5 ft from the top.

Posted by RacSony
did they mention release date etc?

Looking pretty good. Overall, nice

Mid 2019, probably May/June - once Samsung and Huawei and others sell millions of S10s, P30s etc already... Then comes the Sony

Looking very good. Finally, it's time for me to upgrade......

Posted by moogoo
Congrats myp910. Hope it serves you well.

Posted by Hawk12
I do not understand the point of the many downgrades.

- at least 30% less pixels than other premium, ppi is barely above 400
- less battery
- no night skills
- midrange sized cmos
- no front speaker
- another selfie downgrade ( same used by L2, they forgot how awful it was on xz2)

And the product page does not mention Predective Capture.

So it looks like Sony went another route.

Gone is the 1/2.3 sensor and replaced by a 1/2.6 sensor featuring, drum roll please, dual pixel autofocus with pdaf, and for 2 sensors as well.

Also selfie cam has been downgraded, while not a feature I use for taking pictures but only video calls, so gone is 13mp cam because there probably is no room for it in such a thin bezel. Can't wait for all the complaints.

Good to finally see OIS on the 2 cams with EIS as well, like I said in previous posts nothing stopping Sony from using both on the cams, especially when you can turn off one or the other if you need to.

Curious to see some camera samples and how Sony has improved things or not.

As for the battery, I am sure it could last just as long as in xz3 if not more since the sd855 is on 7nm and much more energy efficient. But the large 4k oled could hamper the battery life a bit.

Also at 6.5 in the screen is larger than the z ultra yet it is smaller but not as thin. Those people wanting the return of a z ultra, here it is more or less.

Anyways will be interesting to see the reviews from various sites and curious what problems they will decide to use this time around.

As for the battery tech, Sony uses Li-ion while Huawei uses Li polymer. You can read the differences here

https://www.androidauthority.[....]er-whats-the-difference-27608/

And here
http://blog.ravpower.com/2017[....]-vs-lithium-polymer-batteries/

I feel maybe Sony has used Li ion to maybe save cost? That being said Samsung also uses Li ion in the S10 as well, with the fold getting polymer. Regardless of why Sony choose this route and smaller capacity, it will be interesting to see how long this phone will last in various battery tests.

Why there's no night mode yet ?!

Posted by maiaramdan
Honestly, I like it very much
the battery is not an issue to me , always have a powerbank
Fit & Finish looks superb from the videos even compared to XZ3,

Posted by Hawk12
Looks like 6.5 21:9 has less area than 6" 16:9.
It should be 5020 x2160, this one has same ppi of Z2.
EIS can be disable, OIS cannot ( no phone has this option). Also OIS alone is shitty for video, those phones with 4k60 prove this. Video is useless if you move. Jelly effect and it uses battery.

16,7 cm but they do not use 1/1.8".... But a camera 20% smaller than Z1.

We will see if the EIS can compensate for any jelly effect from the OIS

MY ONLY WISH THAT SONY DOESN'T RELEASE ANY OF THESE 2019 PHONES IN INDIA just like XZ2 Premium, XZ3 and XA2 series. These are dead on arrival no matter how low they price them.

Finally the year has come for me since 2001 when I switch brand from Sony to some other. Hugely disappointed with the battery capacity and front camera specs. Have been waiting for 2 yrs for a decent Sony.

Will still stay esato as long as possible.

Posted by Tsepz_GP
That is an absolutely stunning device.

Very unfortunate about the battery, then again I have been spoilt by the ridiculous 4200mAh juicer in the Mate 20 Pro so it's going to be hard for me to find a phone that matches its battery life. My next phone will probably be a Foldable anyway.

This seems like a decent effort by Sony, I just hope that tiny battery mixed with a 6.5inch 4K screen will not mean compromise on usage.

Posted by moogoo
I would like to see actual hands on usage but it seems Sony isn't letting anyone touch and use it. Shame. I want to see YouTube on it to see how normal everyday videos are displayed

Posted by Xajel
Personally, while the device is stunning, it's main shortcomings for me are

1. Price.
2. Lack of 3.5mm plug.
3. Battery, while Sony are very good for their battery life efficiency compared to the rest of the market, 3330mAh is not up to our like. I mean even if currently they have comparable battery life compared to the rest. If they used higher capacity ones with their fantastic technologies will mean better than average battery life which will be a very good selling point for them, which they really really need.

But regardless, I'm very impressed, specially the video options. But again as a device meant for multimedia and it's great screen with DCI-P3, HDR, Atmos sound, bla bla bla, and not having a 3.5mm plug is hard, carrying another adapter is really annoying for everyone.
They should really make a standard charging cable with built in 3.5mm female plug.

But, I don't know if anybody noticed, they didn't release any info regarding the internal storage, only RAM and the microSD support.

Impressive and it's good to see Sony producing a slim and powerful device again and that screen sounds amazing.

Posted by Hawk12
No other brand could so far @Viv ....

It comes in 64/128. No mention if it is ufs2.1 or 3.0

Since there is no wireless charging, they should have made it all metal. This is actually a stunning device, I think it could be the best in its class. I think it will get rave reviews all round.

How come gsmarena state that it has wireless charging?

Posted by sidneylopsides
No wireless charging.
Jelly effect is caused by rolling shutter, not OIS.

PhoneArena's hands on shows Predicted appearing on a photo, so that's still there.
It also shows the aspect ratios for photos and 21:9 isn't there, but is on the 10. Hopefully that's down to early software.

no, Sony's has dual OIS....

no wireless charging makes me sad. would have liked to have that when i upgraded.. guess i will wait another year.

does this have raw image support ?

look forward to seeing in depth reviews.

Posted by goldenface
So what is the favourite colour so far?

Posted by moogoo
i'd like to see it in white...

you gonna be upgrading goldenface?

Posted by goldenface
Definitely. I have an XZ2 and I've just refurbished my white Z5 Compact, both to go on sale to help absorb the cost. My Z3 Tablet is on the way out so this will complement my Pixelbook nicely.

Not decided on the colour yet though, although the purple is looking mighty fine.

I think the white will be the choice for elegance
Purple and Black no
Grey not so

goldenface - aw man. why'd you have to say that? now i'm gonna want to upgrade too even though i wasn't even thinking to!

haha. lack of wireless charging does kinda kill it for me. i think it will be a great device though. but since my xzp is still slick and battery life is great, i'll probably wait til next year...

i'm sure i will go back and forth on this topic again and again for the next 6 months. haha. especially if they bundle it with something amazing.

Posted by goldenface
@moogoo

You mentioned the magic word - bundle - I'll be keeping my eyes peeled for European Sony Mobile sites as they always seem to have good deals. I nice pair of the latest Wireless Headphones would go down well.

Posted by moogoo
i think they will offer some pretty good bundles as they usually do. but no wireless charging and smallish capacity is really turning me off. the screen is amazing and the camera tech looks very promising. i'd love to be able to take advantage of all that... guess it really depends on the price.

there hasn't been any official price / release date announced, right? I'm gonna guess it will be $900 USD minimum.

Posted by Hawk12
According the spanish channel TOPES DE GAMA they could use the phone for a while but not show the whole UI of the flagship. Some stuff are locked by Sony.

The phone indeed looks incredible. All except the gray.
Saw the video and gray is not that dark.
Kinda gray of the clouds.

I think battery endurance will be similar to XZ2P
It has much lower ppi than other premium and screen area is similar to 5.9" 16:9.

So said Sony gave up on tablets. Still today Z4T is among the best.

This is what I talk about ... Start at 1:36
https://youtu.be/WeFhCJK3IbE

All his videos I have seen this happens to phones with OIS . Not regular shaking, but vibrating.
Sony phones dont.
Even if you walk faster it can be seen a bit already.

What do you mean?

Posted by ascariss
Maybe he was referring to the fact both the 12MP 26mm and 12MP 52mm feature OIS but maybe he meant something else.

Interesting enough, in the email from sony mobile, instead of the name, Xperia 1, I had PF13.

The new PF13 is made with technology used in professional Sony monitors, cameras and audio, to deliver the best experience in a smartphone. Watch your favourite films and TV shows come to life with the stunning 21:9 CinemaWide™ 4K HDR OLED display and triple lens camera system.

I believe both previous premiums were, PF11 and PF12.

Posted by Hawk12
Which markets are selling the midranges already?

Posted by cableguy
You can get the 10 and 10 plus in UK and ireland today
And Sony mobile says 8 days for L3

Posted by MyP910
I was really hoping for wireless charging so that I can use car holder that comes with wireless charger. This is my only gripe at the moment. I don't really mind the battery capacity as I know Sony had the best battery optimization among all other phones in the past and sure it will be the same this time.

If this phone comes with wireless charging... it will be perfect.

Posted by moogoo
i agree myP910. definitely something that should be there. i wonder why they didn't add it? it's almost a necessary feature these days. my dream of building a desk or side table with built in wireless charging area doesn't come true without having this feature! I NEED IT. haha.

i may still bite on this phone if there's a very tempting bundle. otherwise, i'll wait for next year's premium.
