Best MWC 2017 device announced. Great job Sony!

Did I see right!? it has a Snapdragon 835,yes?

Better than the LG G6 and Huawei P10 Plus

Posted by McKinley
No one did see this coming until the very few last days ahead of MWC.
Great job Sony, I am sold as well.
Here, take my money right away!

The specs on this are awesome, great that it's a very competitive device and the camera sounds amazing. With all that tech I'm willing to accept it's size and design but there is always a couple of things that bug me. Firstly, the bezels are big up top and bottom but if that's what is needed for the camera then I'm fine because the camera is advanced. Personally I wish it has the front of the XA1 Ultra which looks perfect for a flagship design. I would also take the speaker design from the XA1 Ultra as well, much more discreet and prettier than on the XZP. Second is the single piece glass loop. It looks great but if you break a corner you could crack the front and back too, I'm hyper critical about the S8 being fragile with its design and I think this might be too expensive to repair if you break it. Other things that I really like are that the volume rocker is in the correct place, the bottom strip of plastic from the XZ is gone and the NFC is positioned correctly. If the battery life is good then I will be picking one of these up for sure.

Still no DAC/AMP

Pathetic, generally of user listen to mediocre compressed audio file

why we're need to pay more for barely use hardware?

Indeed, Unfortunately for me who listen a music from 24 bit FLAC file.

One more thing. Even if you listen from a lossy file the great pair of DAC and AMP still can show a big difference in quality.

The P10 plus and G6 have nothing on the XZP and I can't see anything else at MWC that'll get close to it either

Posted by Archdragoon
That's right. While Huawei focus on still picture SONY focus on Video.

I hope the redesignd g lens reduce blurry corner issues at least.

The thing I like on XZ Premium is it finally has USB 3.1

Not so sure if microSD Card read/write speed has been improve. (It was horrible up until now)

any clue on how the 4k works now? All time or just when watching videos/images?

Posted by moogoo
I think i'm with you XperiaJUNKIE!!!

now.. how am i gonna sell my XZ...

Android Authority says XZs is going for $700 in april. Which mean XZP is going to be in the $800 range.. hot damn. that's gonna hurt the wall even with selling my XZ! i may have to wait a few months for the price to drop... that makes me sad. We shall see how my finances work out..

BTW for those who don't know yet... the super slow motion is captured at 720p resolution, not full 1080p resolution. This is a bit of a shame, but I'm guessing it is a limitation of the memory that is stacked on the sensor. Would have been amazing if it could do the super slowmotion at 4K resolution so you could view it on your 4K screen... now that would be WOW

Wow I'm actually impressed. At last Sony did not blow it

It looks like a really good phone. If only the bezels were smaller it would have no competition. OIS wouldn't hurt as well .

Posted by moogoo
i'm kind of surprised no one has really complained about the 4GB RAM since other phones are offering 6GB variants.

Posted by HxH
Calling himself as audiophile but keep relying on such a tiny DAC/AMP in smartphone.

Shame, can't be that so serious. Hopefully your 24bit music shall not pirated one.

----------------------------

@moogoo
720p for the 1st generation is not so bad IMHO, maybe limited with processing power.
Snapdragon 835 isn't jump that big leap compare to Snapdragon 820/821.

XZs is really temp to me, XZ Premium is great but bit too large to my liking
but I have to strict on my routine at least two years per one device change
then will make consideration again in late of 2018 and it definitely will
have same suffer with next gen camera sensor in 2019 device,

@moogoo all phones that I've seen with 6gb of ram don't really have much else to show for it. A prime example is the Oneplus 3T, it's actually a very boring phone and it's only stand out feature is the 6gb of ram. The XZ Premium however has a lot more going for it than just that and for me the XZ Premium is currently setting a new benchmark in terms of software meets hardware performance within Android.

Posted by moogoo
@HXH - yea. i'm not complaining. I'm just informing and doing a little wishing I just got the XZ not too long ago so I am in a bit of a predicament as well. I think the XZP is really nice though and if i can get a good price for my XZ, I'll probably get it once the price drops. I don't think I want to pay a full $800USD price tag for it though (that's my guess on price, nothing official).

@XperiaJunkie - definitely not complaining about the 4GB of ram. I think more would be great but Sony can do a lot more with 4GB than others can do with 6GB. So, that's not the real problem. I think Sony should boost the specs a bit just to blow everyone out of the water since most people look at pure numbers rather than actual performance. Especially all those review sites that tend to be biased against Sony.

Posted by ascariss
Hmm wonder if the new XZs and XZ premium will have manual controls for the camera. Anyone know?

Posted by moogoo
ascariss - based on hands on videos, looks to be the similar manual controls as on the XZ.

Posted by Gitaroo
any info about came HDR capture being display in HDR mode on the sceen? If not then the HDR screen is pretty much pointless.

Posted by moogoo
gitaroo - not 100% sure but I would imagine the 4K HDR works like the x-reality engine where it gets turned on for images and videos. That being said, an HDR photo is somewhat unrelated to how it is displayed later. But, to answer your question, my opinion is yes.

Has anyone seen any videos with more information about the slo mo feature? from what i've seen, you can only record about 1 second of real time at 960fps. I'm wondering if you can record longer clips at lower frame rates? I'm not sure how slow mo is implemented on other phones from apple/samsung. Can they record entire videos in slowmo (e.g., a 2 minute video in slow mo?).

4GB RAM doing just fine in my S7 Edge, I never run out of RAM no matter how hard I push it, so I see no problems with the XZ Premium coming with 4GB RAM at all, as long as it's not 3GB RAM.

The Pixel has 4GB RAM, same with LG G6 and most other 2016/2017 Flagships, so it should be fine.

My concern was SoC and Sony delivered abundantly, great move by them.

Posted by Archdragoon
I think I found something ridiculous here...

When you can't deal with fact you start insult other people instead?

Well all of my 24bit file has been purchased from HDtrack.

yeah, if I have to choose more ram vs latest SoC, I rather have newest SoC. Sony android phones are generally very lean.

@musa
All time except heavy games,UI is always 4k rendered

Posted by moogoo
josephnero - you upgrading too? haha.

Posted by McKinley
Seems like the owners of XZ in here will be upgrading to the XZ Premium.

Posted by moogoo
^if i can afford it!! i am thinking i should sell my XZ now so i can get the most money for it... by May it won't be worth much. and even then i may have to wait a few months for the price of the XZP to drop a bit. i'm predicting an $800 pricetag.. ouch.

Wow!! No halfass job from Sony this year!!

Posted by rraz9228
This is a nice upgrade to my Z5 Premium. I was forced to get it when my Z Ultra died but now it looks like the timing is prefect. Luckily I didn't buy the XZ as my Z5P is still new then. I will probably wait a little bit for the price to go down as I am in no rush and I'm still happy with my Z5P.

Posted by josephnero
@moogoo definitely but I'll wait for the price to go down a bit lol.

Few tidbits from whitepapers:

Posted by XperiaJunkie
Definitely getting an XZ Premium and that deep sea black looks amazing. Did anyone see if it'll launch with Google Assistant?

Posted by moogoo
Oh wow. i haven't looked at the whitepaper yet but if it can output RAW photos that would be amazing. I wonder if shutter speeds will be upgraded too and we can have more than 1 second.

@xperiajunkie - haven't seen any official word about it but Google has already announced it's rolling out google assistant to non-Pixel marshmallow/nougat devices in the coming weeks. So i'd be surprised if it doesn't have it out of the box and if not, it's just a simple update away.

The XZ Premium whitepaper listed LTE networks
support only Category 11 which translate to 600Mbps
while slide in press conference demo show 1Gbps speed (Category 16)

Hopefully just typo

Sometimes they just copy an old WP and just do some changes.. a lot of times this happens specially with the first version of the WP.

If it had rounded edges & 6GB of RAM this would have been perfect. Nevertheless this is great..hoping to see SONY turn around things this year. They better market the crap out of the slo-mo capture.

Posted by moogoo
If it had rounded edges it wouldn't be a Sony. It would look like everything else out there. I personally like the squared edges.. it makes it a Sony. yes, it makes the bezels look bigger, but I personally never had an issue with them.

6GB would have been nice but it's not necessary at this point.

The slo-mo capture is amazing. That and the bigger pixel size and predictive capture are great too.

Camera, SD835, and 4K HDR screen are the reasons i want to upgrade from my XZ.

I am curious how well the battery will last given the new SOC and a 4K HDR screen. I Look forward to the battery tests!

Posted by McKinley
Is this like the Z5 Premium where only a few supported apps could use the 4K resolution or is it 4k completely?
I rather have it like the previous Premium but with more supported apps. Who wants to play stuttering games at 4K anyway?

As for the design itself, which I find more redefined over the XZ. However, I don't like the big top and bottom bezels. It doesn't have to be like the other phones but just slightly smaller than it is right now would have been great.
One last thing I would want is Sony to provide high-quality headphones to further justify the premium name and premium price tag we can expect from this.

For me this is a day 1 purchase.

Posted by josephnero
UI and apps always 4K.only heavy games switch to FHD

Posted by nikola1970
Not true, everything is non 4K besides multimedia (photos/videos).

Posted by goldenface
The 4K screen with HDR is a great combo but my favourite feature is definitely the Motion Eye; no other phone comes close, for now.

As for the bezels, I'd prefer to have twin front facing speakers to complement that gorgeous screen. What's the point of having decent speakers at all if they're facing the wrong way.

Posted by josephnero
@nikola1970
you are wrong mate.As I said only heavy games and intense graphic apps(do we really have that many graphic intensive apps??))
(( will render your whole interface in 2160 x 3840 — no shenanigans here))
((f you want to enjoy Android 7 Nougat in full 4K, however reasonable that is when we are talking about a 5.5-inch screen, the newer Premium is the way to go. ))
((will be pushing out 4K imagery at all times))
