Today, me and my colleague were in the office and all the managers and directors had gone home for Christmas. It was only me and 2 people in the office. One of the lads said he thought we could get off at 3:30, but my manager and directors never said anything to me. We left, but now I'm worried that I may have done the wrong thing. Do you think they could fire me when I get back? I mean its not a great work environment anyway, but I hope they don't get rid. I think they like me and its only a small place, but I don't know how bad that is?

It all depends on many different things. Such as your disciplinary record at your place of work. If you're on your final warning, i can imagine they could dismiss you on grounds of gross misconduct.
Any employer could sack you at any time if they wanted, but then they take the risk of a serious legal case against them. That is why they have disciplinary procedures. If you've had verbal warnings, written warning and a final warning then they've covered their own backs if they did boot you out.
However, it also matters about the work that you do. If by you not being at work until your finishing time causes harm to their business or people i can imagine them taking further action. For example, i worked until 7pm this evening being a convenience store manager. I wanted to close up at 3pm just like many other people but could not. If i did they could discipline me for loss of sales, poor customer service, deserting my post etc.
If you work in an office doing admin for example, your work is done and theres literally nothing else to do then you've good reason to leave early - but they have good reason to pay you less also.

If this is the first time you do this, they should not take seriously. Maybe a warning should get to you in case you did it wrong.
