Looks like Sony had put all their best in-house tech in this phone, save for the "above-average-in-its-class" processor and the "above average-in-its-class" display, this had even more HW features to brag than even the best breed from other smartphone makers. I'm so glad we finally have a waterproof high end phone

If i "accidently" break off the flap covering headset jack, would it still be water proof?

I think the cover was there to ensure the outer case is watertight , so no it has something to do with its IPxx rating, if it's rated higher then perhaps it could have some more water repelling protection

This phone is really cool. Finally,a waterproof phone.

Me like, me want!!

Is'nt waterproof different from water resistant?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_resistant

^^ They're the same, I think it has something to do with marketing.

Quotes from wikipedia

"Water resistant" and "waterproof" often refer to penetration of liquid water. Permeation of water vapor is reported as a water vapor transmission rate. Also, water from condensation is usually separate from "water resistant".

My bad. I thought water resistant can't be submerged under water.

Posted by Bonovox
There is a difference actually. Water resistant is more like splash or rain proof. Water proof is more like swimming at a set depth. Marketing Sony have worded wrong perhaps

Posted by razec
Acro S can submerge under water for 1 meter for 30 minutes, not good for scuba diving but for kid's swimming pool it'll be perfect! and yes a waterproof phone should also withstand moist which I think is not possible with the Acro and go.

It's handy for talking in the rain. Does the Arco S have any metal on it like Ion or the P?? And why is someone saying it's last years specs or processor?? Who cares who needs quad core?? I don't

Posted by Tsepz_GP
Now this is amazing! If its running the Qualcomm Krait S4 CPU it will be great.
1910mAh battery, water and dust resistants, 16GB built-in mem PLUS MicroSD expansion, straight out the box with Android4.0....THIS is what the Xperia S should've been, seems we've got a true Sony 2012 flagship now, the Acro S.

I just wish Sony would improve their video codec support.

stupid question, what´s the main difference to the XP S? Expandable memory?
Seems to me almost the same device but maybe I'm overlooking something.

Posted by Bonovox
And I also look forward to further releases too as Sony did say they are going to release some exciting new handsets. I much prefer this over the XS

Expandable memory+water resistance+1910Mah battery. It's a bit more thicker.

Why is Xperua Blog now saying UK release unlikely?? Why would Sony do this in one of its biggest markets??

Why choose. Europe needs economical growth, so go and get them all.

They probably got fed up with Bonovox and his nit picking on previous SE/Sony mobile phones.

Anyway, will be interesting to see how this does for Sony. I hope we begin to see more dust and water resistant high end phones.

yes well I will keep the U and get the P. Give Sony some growth then If this won't come to UK then what we gonna get apart from the cheap Xperia Go?? Seems stupid

Those new Sony phones looked good in the beginning but now they just all seem to have the same boring shape... There's so little variety in the designs...

Posted by Bonovox
Ahem,Samsung are more like boring designs all the same

I never bought a Samsung phone in my whole life, I'm just saying I found the designs of Sony Ericsson phones to be much more distinguished from each other than Sony phones.
I mean, Sony is puking out new phones now. Surely there could not have gone much thought and inspiration into their phones if they are releasing a new phone every two weeks or so.

Look at this overview of phones: http://www.sonymobile.com/global-en/products/phones/
You can clearly see where Sony and Ericsson divorced. You got to admit, the pre-divorce phones have much more inspired appearences.

Cool device. Interesting if it's similarly durable to Xperia Active.

Does anyone knows what it is?
(to me it looks like charging connector for a dock station)

Yes true really fed up with skinny cheap feeling devices that are labelled as premium

Posted by pt020
This one is "fat" because it has a double body like the Xperia active.

someone brought the same question on Xperiablog yesterday
and yes it's a docking connector

@razec ... thank you.
Strange that it is open on waterproof phone.

Posted by Ranjith

I think this will be my next phone, I like this feature set more that the Xperia S and I'm glad that there may be a docking station.

Xperia P was going to have docking station as well, but... umm, you know, for some reason it was cancelled in the last moment. So don't be so sure until the dock is really on the market.

Apparently it's anti-rust. It definitely is there for docking purposes.

That was not my worry ... I was thinking about short circuit when under water.

Posted by Bonovox
I thought it was rather cool when I once seen someone do an under water video with their Xperia Active Under a swimming pool.

If this thing had quad-core. Damn. Dual-core does it for me though I can't help but think how it would just fly off the shelves had it been in trend when it comes out. Quad-core next year then trailing as always when there'd be other cooler hardware innovations by then

Posted by Tsepz_GP
Even if it was a dual-core Qualcomm S4 Krait it would be amazing, i dont get why they use the S3 and not the Krait or NovaThor, both run rings around that outdated S3, and the Krait is more comparable to the Quad-core Tegra3, beating it in graphics and a number of other things.

It's quite easy for us to ask Sony to replace a soldered chip on their smartphone's PCB, as if it was really easy to do at the first place. but then again those devices were designed when SE was still around. Sony is having massive financial troubles right now, so releasing a phone that only sucks at SoC performance doesn't hurt imho, especially if the phone hardly suffers from low FPS when gaming at its native resolution and etc. I'm pretty sure most of us think that SoCs are all that matters in a phone now. perhaps if P800 was remade with 8core SoC and PowerVr SGX 600 GPU while retaining the rest of it's specs then even Samsung fans would ditch their SIII's for that wouldn't they?

Posted by mode
What people want and what works are two different things. Sony has to balance it out which it hasn't been doing for a while now. This has manifested in their declining marketshare.
