'Sony Ericsson announces the Xperia P' - you mean Sony?

Posted by adsada
haha I know, hard habit to break! Just changed it...

So what a peoples views on the device? I really like it, I think it could be SM's most popular device as it has the best of everything and will hopefully be priced decently...

I like it a lot, I'm especially interested in seeing how that NovaThor CPU performs, and I like the fact that its got a brushed aluminium body, very nice touch, think I like it more than the S actually.

White magic looks Awesome

Posted by bronxdude
Does it have 3d sound option?

Posted by smclion102

The big draw is the "WhiteMagic" LCD display, which adds an additional stripe of white pixels to the traditional RGB layout. Sony says it's a dramatically better display and allows the phone to perform better in daylight — it certainly looks beautiful, with super sharp text, excellent contrast, and solid viewing angles. It's nice to see a midrange phone with a high-end display, actually. -Verge

I quite like this one & having an aluminum body that's great

Why did sony NOT put a 720P front camera like the Xperia S?!

This is a premium product and they went with NFC but no HD front camera but VGA?! YUCK!!!

Who cares about the front camera

Posted by dibdin
Yes the aluminum body looks great on this device plus the 'whitemagic' looks and sounds impressive too. Still I have no regrets in ordering the Xperia S, just a slight pity it doesn't have an aluminum body.

Posted by skblakee
Why HDMI/mini-HDMI plug instead of MHL? I thought that would have become standard on all phones.

Posted by Vipera ammodytes
no memory card support?? wtf?

Posted by hihihans
This one could bring me back to they still use it, so can i.
Beautiful in red or silver. Specs are good enough for me. 16gb is tight but hè, you can't have it all.

Posted by bronxdude
do we have the whitepaper for this?

Posted by Arne Anka
Not yet.

Posted by bronxdude
Found it

P Whitepaper

I like the design a high end materials. Shame they couldn't do the same with the S. If this had HD display id be all over it. I'll wait to see what is to come end of Q3. For the record, I love the red.

I do! The only reason I still use my iOS devices is it's better for video conferencing. I hardly use the "phone" functions at all... everything I do is over Facetime, Tango, or Skype... although I might just ditch Tango and Skype for Google Talk's video function.

The front cam on my xperia ray is just sad.... very very sad.... like Yahoo-Video-chat-webcam-from-the-90's sad.

i think this is a great move by sony to release an aluminum unibody phone ahead of apple's rumored aluminum unibody iphone5. of course, they should have stuffed higher specs into it, made it a little bigger, and put a competitive price tag on it. higher specs being larger screen with HD resolution, 12 mp camera, faster processor (dual core is fine). If they did, it would be the #1 best seller of the year, hands down.

btw did someone answer the whitemagic v. HD resolution question? are they mutually exclusive?

I care! I'll be doing a lot more Skype calls - 3/day - for work communications or through Cisco unity vc calls. Since I'm black and have slightly uneven skin tones that really show in pictures this matters to me.

Cameras where never invented to match dark skin; nor was the lighting ever considered that. HD would help show my skin tones better so I'm concerned.

I get the sense the "P" = Premium but Sny left out the premium features.

Other than that -my personal concern - this is a FINE product!
Sony is off to a good start!!

Twin stereo speakers is something I've wanted in a phone, let alone a smartphone for a very long time!

I suppose if I happened to be on a tight budget and didn't care too much about having a high end device, this phone would be ideal.

I don't like the direction Sony is going. We have S, it has regular LCD, 32GB and 12 MPx. Then goes P with cool display but, camera is 8MPx and 13GB of available storage, so it's not really a phone for demanding user. Then goes U with ridicolous small memory of 4GB, 5MPx camera, but it has cool colour changing strip.

This is why SE failed, software restrictions and poor hardware choices. I mean, this colourful bottom is the same as in P and S, why is it only available in U? To make it selling point. The question is, why they didn't enable it in S and P? Because they want You to buy more, or change a lot. Now this is a pure software case, which will be implemented by XDA-developers to S and P. This will anger Sony, and the nice cooperation with XDA that SE accomplished will fall.

Also to me it looks a bit too much SE politics ...
I do not like the idea that they all look the same only size is different...not only that as smaller it gets so more basic it is
(like putting HDMI to big screen phones and no HDMI for phone with little screen...)
NO I want my next mini with a Quad Core processor! and best screen avelible and HDMI port and I do not mind to pay for it (much)more but I wat a small TOP phone.

Let me ask you somthing.

What is the differed between dualcore in a mini and a quadcore in a mini with both 3.5 screen? What for use has it more than a dualcore? Are you just a gimmick type of just a person who just want that the phone run smooth.

Look at the ArcS and Samsung GS2 use 1.2 dualcore CPU and almost running the same as the Arc S.

In the past Sony made the smallest and advanced walkman ,discman, minidisc and so on ..that was the idea to make them the smallest they can but load it with technology, that is wat made Sony's good name ... it did not come from cheap copies of bigger brothers

Well guys lets not criticize Sony here since these devices are Sony Ericsson devices just re branded Sony. We need to wait 6 months to 1 year before we can see whether or not Sony Mobile has learned from the mistakes Sony Ericsson made.
But I sure hope Sony doesn't disappoint.

And about the quad core arguments. Let's end it here. There are going to be only Cortex A9 quad core CPUs this year which are easily defeated by Cortex A15 dual core CPUs.
So I hope the Sony Mint will use a dual core Cortex A15 CPU.
We shall see if Sony launches Cortex A15 quad core phones NEXT year in 2013.

Posted by dibdin
When is the Mint likely to be announced?

For some reason I just prefer this to the big ugly Xperia S. And the aluminum body is a plus. But did I miss something in the specs as I read it more than once. What is the speed and is it dual or single core??

It maybe big but ugly never.

I wasn't after that answer I wanted to know the speed. I just prefer this smaller metal clad device. Cheaper too

Wonder would it be possible to open up the Xperia P and replace the 16GB with a 32GB MMC ?

As I wrote in another thread. Unless you know how to use a soldering iron I wouldn't recommend it. This is how a typical eMMC (as in embedded MMC) looks like.

Posted by cableguy
Thats a no then,
Thanks !

Posted by RandomCarpet
The expected price at the moment is ~360 €, which i would say is a pretty good launch price

Posted by cableguy
that's a very good price, lets hope it's around that and not the 450e mark

I dont think that is a mistake by SONY...probably its a SONY marketing strategy or something like that. They dont want people to buy a specific model and the other model would be disregard. Ex. if xperia P has a same front camera, same hd screen and battery, etc. do you think people will buy the xperia S? Ofcourse not, thats whay they made different model of phone and put some feature to the phone that the other model doesnt have. So people will be confuse on what their going to buy. Thats strategy by SONY is a F****** stupid...

Now i got a bit excited over this phone. I found a album on picasa with pictures taken with the Xperia P (lt22i) and they look really really good: https://picasaweb.google.com/j.stueken/Odlingen2012
At least the same quality as the Iphone 4s, which in my book is a good thing. Gone is the oversharpening and artefacts from previous models.

Posted by Bonovox
Why is Sony so slow releasing new models after Xperia S??

Thanks for posting that link and yes the camera seems better than the one in Arc/Neo/Ray. The quality seems similar to the Iphone 4S, only with a little bit stronger noise reduction. Xperia P looks like it's gonna be really balanced device, aluminium body, White magic display, good camera. My only concern is the battery, only 1305 mAh
