Cross network text delay.

I've been used to texting people on the same network as myself (O2), but recently I've been texting to the Orange network. I receive replies from hours ols texts I've sent, is this normal for today's technology in 2011?
It seems ludicrous that with all the advancements with our communications, our carriers are letting us down.
Thoughts please.
