Camera 3.2 megapixel & Android 1.6 This is not promising

Posted by goldenface
Nice to see FM Radio, NeoReader and micros USB. For a while I thought it was fastport.

Definitely not a high end phone.

XperiaTM X8 will either launch on Android 1.6 with a subsequent upgrade to Android 2.1 a few weeks later or will launch on Android 2.1. The final decision will be taken on a market-by-market basis.

And it's very, very affordable.

It costs less than the X10 mini, so why should X8 have a 5 MP camera ?

Looks like Android 2.1 is definitely in the works for this phone, quote from http://blogs.sonyericsson.com/products/

I think they could have at least put in a flash. How much does a tiny led cost? Not much

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
You know, once upon a time XPERIA meant high end, ultra desirable phones with the latest features. These days it seems to simply mean Android phone.

This is a nice phone for its price and feature-set. Hopefully it will get the 2.1 upgrade the X10 is getting, it certainly deserves to. I just don't honestly see why they labeled it XPERIA other than that it looks a bit like the X10.

EDIT: Thanks NoroBiik.

This is gutting. For me, the X8 would be the most reasonably sized handset of the lot. If it at least matched the specs of the Mini, I'd consider it. If it had the qwerty keyboard like the Pro, I'd definitely get it.

But the fact it actually has less functionality than both these phones, despite being bigger.... Well it's disappointing! Clearly the justification is it's aimed at being an entry-level handset, but I dunno, just feels like such a waste to have that additional space to add more functionality and not use it.

I'm on the fence with this one. It's a great design and looks lovely, but what happened to SE competing at the high-end? This looks like decidedly low mid-range, designed to boost profits.

Yes, that's what it is intended for. If it helps SE to gain market share and having more money for developing the next-generation high-end Android, then that's fine for me.
Naming it "Xperia" might not seem a good choise, but I'm sure the marketing guys at SE have thought this through.

Posted by emzee_ali
I think any OS smartphone, except the Symbian OS, made by SE these days is being named as Xperia.
And i think it wud have made more sense if X8 had specifications of X10 Mini and X10 Mini had the specifications of X8.

Press release quote:
Xperia smartphones add best-in-class entertainment on top of smartphone fundamentals such as applications (apps), maps, email and fast internet connection to create the most entertaining smartphones.

Posted by goldenface
So Xperia isn't part of the Entertainment Unlimited range - which combines the best of both Cyber-shot and Walkman, or have they put the Entertainment Unlimited brand on the back-burner? It's not something we hear much of, Satio and W995 were the last EU device, were they not?

I won't. But...

Naughty, xell

I suppose I, like Muhammad Oli, had a skewed idea of what the Xperia brand stands or is supposed to stand for. I think because of the high end first release that is the X1 most of us saw an ultra high end brand. Personally, I wish they could keep it at ultra high end levels cause the Xperia phones thus far, bar the minis and the X8, have been high end in every sense. The X2 was just an X1 rebranded with horrible software engineering.

This should make money for SE no doubt and it is good for them to give consumers something this cheap with good premium looks.

Posted by carkitter
I was a bit disappointed to find this had a 3.2Mp camera because it certainly looks like a premium phone that should have a 5.0Mp. It's styling is good but I think need to rethink their designs. Apple's new phone has really impressed me with it's innovative high-quality materials and 3-piece stainless-steel chassis/antenna. Its design on the outer edge and seeing continually release 15mm thick, plastic fantastic models even in the mid-range is a turn-off for me. Shame, as I think this is overall a good effort from

Not sure why seem to have gone backwards from the days of the remarkably thin C902, T700 and T650.

I don't know how much it costs, but 3.2 mp can be a deal breaker for many, who want a "medium size X10".

Hi,
Thanks for all your comments. Both positive and negative. Rest assure that we work on addressing any issues or concerns you have with our phones.I briefly wanted to respond to some of the comments stemming from this post:
* With regards to Android updates. We have now confirmed 2.1 from Q3 and onwards. In addition to that you will get some really nice additional ux upgrade such as HD video and DLNA connectivity. You can be certain that we are working on implementing later versions of Android os into our portfolio. However we cannot/do not want to reveal our future Android roadmap at this stage due to commercial/competetive reasons. You will have to stay tuned on this blog for more info to come * Apologies. I am aware that we havent followed up on the post re smaller software update that Sumit did a couple of weeks ago. We will get back to you with more info on this very shortly (read very shortly)
* The processor speed for Yendo is 156 mhz. Thanks for spotting conflicting info on our web. We will revise.
cheers
Mattias

They seem to be all doing it with some new Android devices. Samsung recently released an Android device with onlt a 3 meg camera & my LG Optimus Android phone also has a 3 meg camera. Is this a way of making them more afordable or what. Although I do say my camera is actually good

It will be under 200 when it launches. RRP in Germany is 219. You can always subtract 15-20% from the RRPs to get the launch market price. This phone is dead cheap for its specs.

Have lost their direction again or what or just lost the plot releasing this

Posted by lukechris
This looks remarkably like the X10 mini to me

Posted by Marly
I don't think, SE lost the plot with this phone, it looks great and, as Android is hot, people might be very interested in an Android device with a reasonable price.
Don't forget, cameras and megapixels aren't that hot anymore, it's now all about apps.
Might try one of these , still have some doubts though, not about the OS, I like Android, just don't like "big brother" Google watching me.

Yeah I know that I love my Android device & hardly use the camera

For god sake, 320 x 480 is the oddest screen resolution ever (for an Android handset), meaning lots of apps will be incompatible, as a developer, I don't fancy farting around changing my apps so they work with 1 phone, its not worth the effort.
Bad stuff, only just noticed

O rly?

Actually the screen looks sharp & I have had no problems with apps yet but though I download them I don't buy many just alot of the free ones Xell very sorry for commiting such a crime And Xell so is 320x240 on the Mini

f**k this, now the "xperia" feel is gone, once i could say xperia and everyone knew i had an highend expensive phone, now there are crappy xperia phones that will be sold to the masses.

they could name them something else that stod for value/cheap android phones. and let the xperia stand for the best that SE got.

Posted by lukechris
IMHO this is going to be the new cheap phone for kids, the one you can get for 50 or on a 10 a month contract. Just you wait for a few months after release.

Posted by Bonovox
There is nothing wrong though with making Android affordable to the masses with a cheaper option which may do some good profits wise. I am sure they will still make the high end models. I don't mind the 3 meg camera just they could have at least put an led flash on it

The Samsung Galaxy Spica : http://www.phonearena.com/htm[....]5700-Review-review-r_2310.html

there's going to be a war in the mid-range smartphone arena this year. In regions like Asia where prepaid users outnumber postpaid subscribers 9:1 price is going to be a major consideration. The Spica sells locally here at PHP 13,800.00 or around 243 euros but it's so in demand it's become hard to find.

If SE doesn't have good midrange Android phones, those Spica owners are going to upgrade to high end Samsung android phones (or LG , also popular). Whether Xperia was the right brand to do it in is an open question.

It does not seem to have Mediascape. Does it also have built in FM Radio or MW600 compensates for that?

Agree, however I do not agree with SE using the Xperia on any old copy and paste phone, I don't know why they can't crat a new model letter for the X8/X10mini.
