Strange how there has yet to be a photo thread for W995 so far into its retail production. Let me be the first then, have played around with it and these are my results to date

some people have been posting w995 pics in the c905 photo topic

Posted by mode
That can't be right...right? Anyway, now that we have a proper thread, post away people!

Will follow here y'all after October (In case thing working properly I hope so)

Some more pictures in rain

Posted by mode
@mano82

Lovely double rainbow! And it's quite amazing that you can capture the rain quite vividly. I can't capture rain no matter how hard I try for some reason. The pictures just look wet with the vertical rain lines escaping my lense. Maybe next time I could use Sports mode for faster shutter speed

Anyway, this is my first image out of the box

Thank You So Much Mode I was working, so i had to capture pictures in hurry just automatic settings...

& Your 1st pic is good

It's a funny thing this W995. The sun lit pics sometimes seem like a morph between the P990 and the C902/W902 cam module. The indoor and low light shots seem like an S700 cam module (which has a CCD sensor though, strangely enough). The noise is terrible in low light pics, proving what harm 8.1mp can bring with a tiny CMOS sensor. It's definitely a different cam module than that of the C905. I originally planned on buying a C901 before realizing that I love the challenge of making something wortwhile out of something that's difficult to work with. C901 and its Xenon just seemed too good and easy to handle

Great work mano82, you look set to unleash W995's true potential! These are some pics after I updated my firmware, camera software version 1.7. It's some of the more mundane stuff but...

This camera version made my basement parking look kinda nice

Nice shots ! Some are GOOD and some are not so good How come

Posted by mode
@*Jojo*

Hey ya, it's been a while hasn't it? Good to have you again Anyway, on to your question. Unlike C905, the W995 isn't the easiest point and shoot to work with. It is somewhat like C902, you need to get used to it and know how to use it in what situations. If tweaking with the settings is not your cup of tea then you won't make the best out of its camera. I think a healthy dose of passion can remedy this

Thank you so much Mode Pictures you shared, are awesome... Great pictures & well said about W995's camera

Posted by Lightspeed_x
Hi, nice pictures so far... I'd like to know if someone has tested the color reproduction of skin tones while using flash in low light...

Thanks in advance!

Posted by strizlow800
That's one big shots collection. Great photos indeed. The pictures are clear and good quality, at least the most of them. To be honest I didn't expect the W995 would produce such good quality photos. Usually walkmans have mediocre camera.

Posted by mode
@Lightspeed x
Skin tone with flash in low light is quite accurate but that depends on the distance from subject. From a distance of about 500mm to 1m, auto white balance works fine. But for anything further, I use fluorescent because that seems to represent skin tone most accurately

Auto

Fluorescent

@Strizlow800
I've used W902 and W995 and I think they're both amazing shooters for a Walkman phone eventhough I think there shouldn't be a distinction to make them more special than the rest of the W-series lineup. Had they followed in the tradition of W800, W810 and W900, I don't think they'd be in the mess they're in right now. The Walkman-Cybershot hybrids came too little too late I think.

@Mode: Thanks for taking the time to upload the pictures, definitely the color reproduction is much better than my C702... That's a relief

Great Pix Mode I love W995

Posted by Lightspeed_x
@Mode: Nice shots indeed!...

It's official that its camera its way better than the one in the C702 .... I wonder why, does it have to do with the aperture size in the camera?... the C702 has an aperture size of 1:3.2 while the W995 has an aperture size of 1:2.8... does it really affect performance that much in low light?

Note: I might be confusing aperture size with F/stop... sorry if part of my post does not make much sense...

Some more from me with the new firmware

I must say that even though the camera of the W995 is said to be the worst 8MP out there I think the macro mode is EXCELLENT

@mode:
the low light pictures look very good!

did you disable flash, or live with the default "auto flash" when taking those low light outside pictures?

Posted by Lightspeed_x
@nfts-pstrfs: Which firmware is currently installed in the phone?

What about video recording in low light?, could someone please post a video?

Thanks in advance!

Posted by nfts-pstrfs
The firmware is R1FA035 and the camera software is 1.7 (in the previous firmware it was 1.6).

As for the video recording in low light... No complaints. Unfortunetely I don't have a video to upload.

P.S. You can use the LED light to make life easier when recording in low light.

Posted by mode
@Lightspeed_x

Actually both terms are correct. F-stop is the unit to measure apperture but it shouldn't have anything to do with low light conditions. It's to determine depth of field. The smaller the F-stop value is usually the better especially for macro shots (sharper/clearer subject, more blurry background).

@tvfun
Flash was set for auto on all low light shots. Don't attempt to shoot without flash in these conditions because it'll cause your pics to be riddled with noise (exact opposite of C902/W902 algorithm which would trigger extreme noise suppression)

@nfts-pstrfs
I have your firmware as well
Well, some may dub W995 as the worst 8mp phone but judging from some of the finer examples in this thread, it sure doesn't look like it

@mode

Indeed! Btw you are right you can see how blurry the background is in some of my macro photos. I am impressed

Posted by Lightspeed_x
@Mode: Thanks!, so, what does F: 1:3.2 and F: 1:2.8 means?.... i thought that 1:2.8 let more light enter, so low light pictures would come out with less noise...

Sorry for the offtopic,

Does the W995 records in WQVGA or does it records in QVGA only?

Posted by mode
@Lightspeed_x

What determines how much light comes in are ISO speed and exposure time which is automatic unless you use one of the Scenes in the menu which has predetermined settings to suit certain conditions/ambience. F-stop is exactly what I explained earlier

And yes it records in WQVGA. I used to loathe SE for not providing their consumers with VGA recording, but since WQVGA is much better than QVGA and much smaller in size than VGA I guess I have the best of both worlds (I have only 1-2GB free as it is out of my my 16GB M2 so space really matters to me).

More pics...low, low light. I'm quite pleased with the outcome

@Mode: Nice!!, those look quite well for the environment they where taken on... Which settings are you using?... all auto or twilight landscape (or maybe some manual combination)?

Posted by HxH
Why people never complaint about N86 sucks music quality but always blame 995 for sucks 8mp snapper. I'm OK if 995 dub as sucks snapper because mainly my target for music solution and cam is anyway fine for me.

Great Pictures Mode Here are some from me, all automatic settings:

@Lightspeed_x
I used twilight landscape all the way and only tweaked the exposure bias, mostly used ev -1.0 and -1.7. One of the pictures (the one with the pool and trees) I set it to ev 2.0 and it was brighter than the actual scenery and at the same time the noise was still under control. I have to say twilight landscape is a killer feature of this phone (the same function for W902 was useless) whereby it allows users to capture twlighlight sceneries with accurate colour reproduction

@brazzuka
Thanks, coming from you I'm honoured. I think W995 is not the worst 8mp camera, it's just the trickiest to handle. Once you get the hang of it, you can produce wonders with it

@Mano82
Now those are some quality crisp shots mate, damn. Goes to show once you know your phone, it'll kick arse. The grass looks excellent for full auto. I especially love the last pic

More low light stuff peeps

Some daylight and low light shots. Notice one of the photos with the stagnant helicopter rotor blades as though they're suspended in mid air, my personal favourite

Some shots - the store where I got my W995 , macro plant shot & buildings early morning

(post my shots later, am having a frustrating time resizing then uploading my shots successfully)

Building near sunset

Plant early morning , macro shot

Sony shop

The cam driver still has ways to go, zooming in some of my photos shows strong blue fringing - specially around buildings
