Nokia Bluetooth Headset BH-501 Mini Review

I have just recieved my first set of bluetooth headphones (ones that are compatible with A2DP music streaming anyway) so thought I'd share my thoughts.

First thought on the physical side are that these are a very nice looking bit of kit and solidly built. I was expecting them to be bigger and fairly heavy but theyre no bigger than my sony wired headphones of the same design and lighter too!

They fit very nicely over the ears with the band going round the back of the head. The parts keeping them on your ears are made of a jelly like material and are very comfortable, no pain of discomfort even after several hours use.
I have used them for running in the gym and they hold on very well, no hint of them coming off at all and obviously the lack of wires was a great improvement over the huge wires of my previous setup!

when not in use they fold up nicely to quite a compact size for storage as you can see below. Pairing was very easy and the headphones connect to the phone automatically when they are turned on.

Now for the import bit, the audio quality! First impressions of playing music were unfortunately not great. What exactly the cause is im not sure but there seems to be some distortion when playing music, i cant quite put my finger on it but the music at times comes across as quite 'scratchy' for lack of a better word! Whether this is down to my music being only 128k MP3 or its the general standard of bluetooth streamed music i dont know, unfortunately i dont have any other headsets to compare it with.
Its certainly not unlistenable and will not stop me using them but audiophiles will be disappointed.
Changing of tracks can only be done via the handset unfortunately, however all volume control must be done via the headset, changing the volume level on the phone had no effect on volume levels on the headset, the same applies to the equalizer and stereo widening effects which I found a bit odd.

The headphones also act as a handsfree kit and do work very well for that purpose. The audio is presented in stereo and sounds excellent, very clear and precise. The other person reported I sounded a bit tinny but in general they could hear me very well and could make out everything that I said.
Very impressed on that front as the microphone is in the ear piece and nowhere near your mouth!

Overall im quite impressed with them and for £40 i think theyre pretty good value. I'd be interested to compare the audio quality with other headsets as it isnt as good as I was hoping and would like to know if all bluetooth audio streaming is of this standard.
