Has anybody gotten it to work? I cant connect to my Apple Airport network. Have tried with WPA2 and without, and neither work. The phone just says "Couldn't connect" from the WLAN app, and "network error" or something similar from Web.

Firmware needed?

Strange...

Working without any issues here, on several access points, from several vendors, both with WPA, WEP and no security.

I don't think P990 suports WPA2, but WPA and WEP is suported.

I really don't know how to configure it. My accesspoint says WPA Personal, and I've configured a password (let's say "password"). But I don't know whether to select WPA or WPA-PSK on the P990i. Pre-Shared key looks more correct regarding the options available. For instance, the second screen in the Wifi setup app asks for encryption type (TKIP or AES) and then password. Then I'm asked to save. But it doesn't work.

Selecting WPA, it asks for network authentication (EAP-TTLS or PEAP), then inner authentication (EAP-MD5 or EAP-MS-CHAPv2). It also wants a user name and password.

So I figure WPA-PSK is the correct choice here, since the built-in help system also describes it as a system where a password is input in both the accesspoint and the device.

Still though, seeing that I disabled all types of security in my accesspoint and tried to connect, without any luck, it doesn't seem to be an encryption issue.

The phone just dislikes my network

I'm not sure about WPA2 support (my wireless router does not support it so I can't test), but if using WPA in a non corporate environment you definitely need WPA-PSK.

You also almost certainly need TKIP too, - AES is standard for WPA2, but is a rarely supported option with WPA.

Also make sure you are not hiding the SSID, but I imagine if you are seeing the access point when you scan, that it is not hidden anyway.

Now assuming you have these correct options selected, and the correct case sensitive passphrase (and you do say you have tried with no encryption), the only other thing I can think would be that you have MAC address control (or an Access Control List) setup which is preventing the P990i from connecting.

Also do you have DHCP switched on in your router/access point? It could be that the P990i is trying to get an IP address, but the access point is not issuing one.

Completly unrelated I know, but is there any wy on the P990i of finding out what your current network details are? I know you can show the MAC address, but I've found no way if displaying the current IP, DNS, and gateway etc.

There's no access control enabled and the router is issuing IP-adresses. The P990 is configured to use DHCP, but doesn't seem to get an address. I do use two airports in my wifi network, tied together using WDS. This is needed for the audio streaming feature of the airport to work without hickups.

I should try to disable it.

Well, I've figured it out. I had totally forgotten that I had configured both airports to only accept .11g connections. Obviously, it won't work with the P990i.

Good thing I figured it out though, and hopefully this thread will help somebody as forgetful as I.

Im sure that if you go into internet and click on options, you will find tcpip which will give the settings for ip address, dns and gateway if i remember correctly. Unless your after something completely different, would have been nice if they had included an ip tool...something similar to HoverIP program that i use with my laptop..gives you instant access to all your network settings etc.

You're right I was on about smething different.
In fact what I was meaning was what you have suggested regarding including an "ip tool". It would be nice when connected either via GPRS or WLan to be able to see all your current IP info, and specifically for the Wlan the ability to renew an IP would be good too.

Nah, I can't get it to work anymore. I don't know why. It's connected, but it doesn't receive or transmit any data according to the log, despite the internet icon flashing.

I really have no clue as to what's wrong. I hope a firmware upgrade will fix this (I'm using the one I got with the phone.)

Error message is: "Couldn't connect to proxy www.blocket.se"

In that case then update your phone to the new firmware and you might find that the WIFI might work better.
It could possibly be that your going through a proxy server as i had that message as well. You need to disable it through your internet setting, think its in advanced menu on the internet accounts tab. See if the box is ticked that says use proxy server.
Also check your tcpip settings as well while your there and see if you got an ip address, gateway and dns settings there.

I have to say that wifi has been one of the more stable things I have used on the P990 and have had no problems connecting with WEP at home and to pubilc hotspots elsewhere

i agree...i have been using wifi in public hotsopts, and at home with my linksys rooter, and its been working like a dream...its a BIG thumbs up for SE in this area

I'll have a look. Maybe it's my Apple network products that don't work well with the P990i. I have no idea.

hmm but the antenna is a big thumb down. I need to be close to the ap or open doors between to get it works good. One class room away from the ap and I do not have any connection while all the other on with laptop have great strenght..

Had the same problem...solved it!

Turned out my Airport network was set to 802.11g only

Need to set it to "802.11b/g Compatible" in Airport Admin Utility.

Let me know if this works...

Joeltt,

Yes, I had that problem too, but even with b/g compatibility, I have problems browsing the web. The P990i connects just fine, but no data are sent or received.

It might have to do with the WDS system I'm using. That said, the Airport on the first floor acts as a router, and the Airport on the second floor acts as a remote accesspoint that just forwards the traffic to the router Airport. I need this configuration in order to get my laptop to connect to the second floor Airport, otherwise I won't be able to playback music via AirTunes without hickups.

It's twisted, but works great for every device except the P990i. Then again, this isn't necessarily the problem either. I'll install Windows XP on a Virtual PC as soon as I get some spare time, and perform a firmware upgrade to see if that helps. But coming to think of it, what the heck do I need the P990i to connect to my home wireless anyway? Really, it's more useful when I'm on the run, seeing that nobody wants to use a P990i instead of a PowerBook at home, really.

On a more positive note, navigation and messaging couldn't possibly get better. It's a breeze to use the phone.

I've solved the problem with help from the shop where I bought it. I had to do with IP, gateway and submask. I use static IP on my local network.

I'm happy now

Osmano - Can you pleased give further details on how you solved this problem? I have exactly the same problem myself. I'm using an Airport, my P990 connects but refuses to send and/or receive any data...

Would really like to hear exactly how you solved the problem. Thanks!

Disabling WLAN power saving is the shit. After 24h on the web searching for solutions I found this solution on a forum.
I made a new WLAN account and called it "power saving disabled" where I disabled WLAN power saving. Using this account to cannect to my Airport base station (the old model) everything works.

yes!!! it is the power saving feature that is causing all the problems!!! Disable that and you can surf smoothly

Just for the record, P990 works with WPA2 (with PSK), cause I'm using that. Just choose WPA and then AES for encryption, and you're off!
