A Guide to get Gmail working on k800i (Send/Rec)

Hi guys,

I am a newbie here to the forums so firstly i will say hi to everyone.

I recently upgraded to a k800i on Ornage and have been trying to set up pop access to my gmail account using the in built email client. A lot of people on the forums are having trouble sending email via gmail using the client and are getting a 'certificate error' . I have managed to solve this problem by installing the required certificate on to the phone and can now send and recieve email perfectly through gmail on my K800i.

I am pretty sure that the below guide will work for the m600 as well so please give it a go.

Firstly the settings fo the gmail account are as follows

Messaging --> email --> settings --> Account settings --> New Account

You are asked to create an account name.

gmail

Once that is done, you automatically move on to the setup screens.

Connect Using: GPRS Data Account, not WAP. In my case Orange Internet
Protocol: POP3
Incoming Server: pop.googlemail.com
Incoming Port: 995
Encryption --> Incoming Server: SSL
Encryption --> Outgoing Server: SSL
Username: username@googlemail.com (or gmail.com)
Password: your password
Outgoing Server: smtp.googlemail.com
Outgoing Port: 465
Email Address: username@googlemail.com (or gmail.com)
Download: Whatever your preference is
From Name: Whatever you want
Signature: Your signature
Copy Outgoing: off
Check Interval: Whatever your preference

Now for the certificate part. Please download the required certificate from
http://members.cox.net/mynameisdavid/archive/certificates.zip

Unzip this and within it you will find 3 certificates. The one you require to send email via gmail is called the ThawtePremiumServerCA. All you have to do is transfer this to your phone either via the USB cable or as i did by bluetooth to the phone. Once the phone recieves it it will ask you to accept it and install it. it will then be saved to your phones memory and show up under the security > certificates section on your phone.

Thats is it. You can now send and recieve emails using your phones email client without any error messages (i hope!!)

Thanks

Just to confirm this worked for me.

K800i on O2 contract.

I didn't require the certificate though!

Note: my connection previously just hung at Finding Server - the only differences between the settings I had and the above was the pop and smtp addresses...I was using pop.gmail.com and smtp.gmail.com.

I changed these to use the googlemail addresses and it worked straight away.

Not tried sending yet though which is where I assume I'll need the certificate.

Cheers

Thanks @UsmanHamid - great info. After loading the certificate i no longer get the "certificate request" but now just get "send failed" how difficult can gmail be to set up on the K800i??! I am also on Orange and cannot figure any possible way to get this to work. Are you using SSL or TLS settings?

Cheers!

thru email client do my operator will charge any thing?

as i hav been using gmail thru operamini only.

i hav never used this email client.

can any one pls tell me???

thanx in adv.

Posted by englishmanabroad
@ajeetpv - whether you use opera or the email client you will still be transfering data and, depending on your service contract, will incur a charge.

Regards

Hi there englishmanabroad

I am using both incoming and outgoing servers set to SSL (not TLS).

Hi UsmanHamid,

Thanks for that - I am pleased that you got gmail working - For the life of me I cannot understand why I cannot do the same.

Regards

Posted by UsmanHamid
Just a quick question. Does you email address have at @gmail.com ending or a @googlemail.com ending.

As i understand originally Googles email addresses were all ending with gmail.com when they were only making it available in the US. However they came accross some legal issues with the Gmail name in the UK so changed it to googlemail.com.

Therefore any new accounts would have a @googlemail.com ending.

I assume that they left all original email accounts ending with @gmail.com the same.

If you remail ends with gmail.com then make sure the email address you are entering for your username is ending with gmail.com and NOT googlemail.com.

Posted by englishmanabroad
UsmanHamid - that is a good point. I have the original gmail account (before they changed it in the UK) - funnily enough - if I change this to googlemail it still works for "receive" - I will make a new account up @gmail using your certificate and try again

Thanks!

Posted by englishmanabroad
Hi UsmanHamid, this is interesting. i have gone back to the pop.gmail.com and smtp.gmail.com addresses - now it states on receive "unknown certificate" continue? and on the send it states "certificate not known, contact your service provider etc"

I have your certificate installed - please could you tell me where they came from as there may be a different one for gmail.

Thanks in advance

Posted by UsmanHamid
Hi the

keep the pop/smtp settings the same as googlemail.com. Just change your username to gmail.com. then it should all work fine

Posted by englishmanabroad
@UsmanHamid ...sincere thanks for your help. i finally have gmail that works - both send and receive!! from my k800i!!!! Cool

I have checked settigns again and again every thing is to according but cant get it working. Anything you can think of im missing or perhaps not doing properly?

Hi @F430 - will help if i can - @insane.k - yes, google mail via web is great as well but not so good if you want to send photos etc using the phones own interface.

@F430 - have you put your user name and password @gmail or @googlemail in both the settings AND advanced settings fields? this was the only thing I missed from @@UsmanHamid excellent guide.

Posted by englishmanabroad
@F430 - i have listed below everything on my K800's set up for Gmail -

Exact order as per my K800i menu...

Settings - Gmail

Connect Using: Orange GPRS
Email address: me@gmail.com
Connection Type: POP3
Incoming Server: pop.googlemail.com
username: me@gmail.com
Password: *******
Outgoing Server: smtp.googlemail.com

Advanced Settings

Your Name: me
Signature: k800i
Download S&R (didn't change)
Check Interval (haven't set but tried and it worked well)
Push email: (greyed out)
Allow connection: home network
Copy outgoing: off
Encryption TLS/SSL
: Incoming server SSL
: Outgoing Server SSL
Outgoing username: me@gmail.com (same as above settings)
outgoing password ****** (same as above settings)
Incoming Port: 995
Outgoing port: 465

*****************
That's it - Apart from installing @UsmanHamid's certificate. Now works a charm. Hope it helps

I have a @gmail.com address, and according to gmail's instructions on their web page, incoming and outgoing servers should be pop.gmail.com port 995 and smtp.gmail.com port 465 or 587, so I tried those server names, and it works too. After I installed the other two certificates in the zip file as well, I donb't even get the certificate complaint when receiving gmails anymore. Thanks very much for this solution!

@englishmanabroad
Thanks Mate, it worked.

I too could never get the email function to work until I stumbled on the setup system on the sony website. Found in the software section u just select your options one by one and sony send u a text with the data to install, up and running in no time.

Please tell the revision on the firmware if it success or fail.

I cannot use gmail outgoing but incoming works even if I had done exactly
as this thread says.

I have the version R1CB001

Posted by englishmanabroad
Hi @lesve

My firmware version is the original R1CB001 on an unbadged unlocked K800i from O2. Currently using my work Orange SIM. Interestingly, i read on one of the google forums that the @googlemail.com is just an alternative server so the @gmail.com should work too.

Posted by aminator
I cant get this to work for the life of me, spent 35 minutes on the phone to the retail help desk of o2 who would not for love nor money pass me onto data support. They said they would "text me" the settings

I tried going down the ericsson website route but when I fill in all the fields and press ok it texts then to me but requires a passkey. Problem is when I press ok on the website the page just goes white and it says "done" in the bottom left of the corner.

My settings are as follows for o2 contract settings:

account name: Gmail
connect using:o2 mobile web
email adress: me@googlemail.com
connection type: POP3
incoming server: pop.gmail.com (have tried googlemail too)
username:me@googlemail.com
password:******* (email login password)
outgoing server:smtp.gmail.com (have tried googlemail too)

advanced settings

your name: left as is
sig:---
download s&r: left as is
check interval: left as ispush email:greyed out
allowconnection: home network
encryption: both set as ssl
outgoing username: me@googlemail.com
outgoing password: *******(email login password)
incoming port: 995
outgoing port: 465

am i doing something wrong still ?

Posted by englishmanabroad
@aminator, try the sonyericsson configuration tool again - use the settings for your O2 account as a template. When you have finished the screen does go white - but scroll up for the pin code - (its not well designed) - See if the O2 GPRS settings are different from your O2 mobile web - I have just downloaded the same and will try to get gmail to work through O2 and compare notes.

Posted by englishmanabroad
@aminator - ok, I have used the SE configurator to send me out the O2 GPRS Data account and O2 email address which I have changed to the gmail settings - both send and receive works without problem. (O2 pay monthly) - try it out that way using the same settings I posted below and let me know how you get on.

Posted by aminator
ive managed to get as far as getting the mail to send and it hangs and says sending server not found...

in the advanced tab should I fill out the username/password too ?

right... I can get incoming emails, but cant do outgoing, keeps saying sending server not found

final edit: Got it to work finally switched the outgoing port from 587 to 465.

Thanks for all your help !!!

Having tried every combination under the sun to try getting the K800i to send using Gmail's SMTP server on T-Mobile UK, and failing with the "Server not found" message each time, I'v ecome to the conclusion that there may be an issue with SSL handling in the firmware (using R1CF001).

The solution was to use T-Mobile UK's SMTP server instead, which is smtp.t-email.co.uk

Posted by lesve
It's me again (LeSve)
K800 with revision R1CB001.

I have done everything that people do. Make the configure like this thread says. Tried with both smtp.gmail.com and smtp.googlemail.com.

I have also uploaded two of the three certificate.

Now what's the problem.
Receiving works all OK but Sending email seems to work OK to the beginning, but after some blinking on the screen everything stops.

If I looked on the status of that mail it says "Server disconnected" and why
is not told.

Is this K800 or Google which make this disconnection ?

Regards

@lesve, sorry to hear that you are still having problems. it sounds like we are missing something very small - have you included @gmail or google mail for your username in both advanced and initial fields? Any capitals in your password? - possibly try changing the outgoing server port on SSL between 465 or 587. Good luck!

Ensured using correct login - check
Ensured using correct password - check
Tried using both port options for outgoing server - check
Still get problem saying "Unable to contact server" - check

Hi @redvers - what gprs provider are you using? have you attempted to create a new account with the Sonyericsson configurer? - Are the GPRS settings the same as your providers? - Also, not sure if it makes a difference but I checked all the "Authentification" options in Data communications"- it only had "PAP" checked before.

Posted by jadler
Works fine for me too, it seems. Debranded K800i on 3 Sweden, who recommends only using their SMTP, but now after installing all three certificates (did all at once), it just works. I will just have to get flurrymail to stop polling making all messages unread.

Thanks!

Using the T-Mobile internet settings, not tried creating a new one. Can't edit the authentication options as the t-mobile settings (which you need to use to ensure your data allowance is free under Web n Walk) are locked. However, without me changing anything it now works, so I suspect the "unable to contact server" was a genuine error message!

Now I have Gmail going, is it possible to have more than one active account? I have my own domain related email account as well as gmail, and ideally I would want both to be checked every 5 minutes. However, from what I can figure out, you manually have to switch between accounts, and only the active account will poll. Is that correct?

Posted by jadler
@redvers: Not sure. Why not try? Set both accounts to poll every 5 minutes, set gmail as active account, send mail to your other address and wait 5-10 minutes. If you do not receive it, try to find another solution. Personally I forward my other accounts/addresses to my gmail address and read everything there. The only exception would be my new address given to me by 3, @3mail.se, that I hardly use, but still keep since they send SMS notifications for free.

I have noticed a problem with gmail polling, not sure if it is me, phone or gmail that causes it. Grateful for any help or ideas.

I poll Gmail every hour, mail gets downloaded fine, but when I have read the mail, next poll it will disappear from inbox, not being marked for (local) deletion. I want messages to stay in inbox until I say otherwise. Any clues as to what is going on?

This is the way the gmail server works. Unfortunately it is not 100% compatible with the phone's way of dealing with deleted messages.

You could try to change the Download setting to "headers only", in which case the messages will still disappear, but only after you have manually downloaded and read them.

Another option is to change the size limit option to something very small, like 1-4 kb. Then most messages will remain in your inbox, some of them might be truncated (use more/download to fetch them completely). There is no 100% solution I'm afraid. :/

@boba 1 more question .... if i have to transfer the file via USB where do i save the certificate ???

Posted by Lundmark
I tried using the email on my P990 at home, and couldn't send. I figured it was due to the SMTP servers not being allowed access through my home internet provider. Added a new group account where my home WiFi wasn't included, which forced the email client to grab emails through a GPRS/UMTS connection.

Worked great.

May seem like a dumb question but how do i install the certificates lol, i manage to get them on phone but not install?

Posted by dnapro
Scratch the last comment, Orange K800i's come with a thawte cert already installed and the phone will let me in to gmail server using that one anyway.

Posted by Xugaa
Can you change the...

'Incoming Server: pop.googlemail.com'

To a '@hotmail.co.uk' address to recieve email from MSN hotmail?

Not unless you pay Micro$oft £15 a year i think, as they don't have a pop server for free users, i could be wrong but i reckon you have to pay!

Uhh, Im having problems getting the certfication on to my SE K610 phone.
I installed PC Suite (with filemanager)
I dumped the .cer file on memory stick folder and on the phone memory folder.
I got an error :/

I also tried sending attaching the .cer file to a email and send it to my mail and then reading it on the phone.
It downloaded the .cer file to the memory stick but I cant do anything from there. I also tried copying it to the phone memory but nothing was possible there either.

Care to elaborate how to get the .cer file on the phone? ^^
I have a bad experience with bluetooth dongles :/

Posted by Shagabuga
Hi. I am also wondering where to put the certificate files in case transfering them via USB cable. In which folder do I have to put them? How can I install them?

Would be great if someone would share his or her experience.
