Probably a stupid question and if it's already been answered I apologise but I couldn't find an answer! Can you put a contract 2G SIM card in a contract 3G phone, i.e. from Orange for example? Any help please to victoriamcneile@mac.com or just post here! Many thanks and sorry for being a thicky blonde female!

I know you wont be able to use the 3G services but will the normal functions work eg calls and texts etc?

yes you can, I've used my orange 3G sim from my K600 in my w800 and it works no problem

The only thing you have to remember

That if you put a 2g sim card in a 3g phone, the sim will not pick the 3 g network up and will not make video calls.

Other wise than that 2g sims and 3g sims will work happy in any unlocked phone.

You can even put a GSM sim card into a CDMA / Nextel Handset and able to make calls on the phone, As long as you provider has an arrangement with the network.

Note that some 3 Sim cards are locked to the phone and will not allowe to be transfered.

Thats so funny. My mate works in a three store in OZ. They told him that if he puts a 3g sim into a 2g mob it would destroy the mob. I could not understand how that would happen. I wonder if he did that would the mob pick up the 2g network that three roams with in oz?

I heard that if you put a Three sim in a 2G phone it will work for a while but then get blocked. This is becuase it starts using the O2 network and Three gets charged for this.

They do, however three lock the sim cards to there network phones.

If you have a old sim card that isnt locked then it will work fine.

It will pick and bounce on the 02 network.

However three locked them as people was getting the contracts, removing the sim cards and just using the 02 network all the time, so three was not bennefitting from this.

It appears that the capabilities and restrictions of 2G/3G sim cards are dependent on the networks and their available technology.

Here in the Philippines, mobile 3G is still in its trial stage, but the leading mobile 3G network (Smart) has somehow made all the old 2G sims forward-compatible: Available mobile 3G services will work as long as your UMTS unit is capable of handling them. No special 3G sim cards are sold (yet).

There is 1 Nokia 6630 from UK, it is 3G locked...

By question is Can this phone be unlocked? If yes how?

After Unlock will it work perfectly on all networks in india? or it will give any problem?

Can i use it on Airtel in india?

alright then I'll re-iterate.

Three's sim cards used to work on SOME 2G phones over a year back, but do not anymore.

(whether they are locked or not doesn't matter, the fact of the matter is, they do not work)

i used my 3 card in 6230i, i managed to access some aparts of the 3zone aswell, email, wap worked fine, thx for the edge feature of the fone and cos the 3 net coverage arent 100% in austria and u usually roam on A1 ( another operator here ), when no 3 net is given.

The whole 2G/3G simcard thing seems a bit overdone to me.
Today (that's why my replu is only so many years after the thread dried up) my old sim card failed and had to be replaced. It was an 'old 2G simcard' and now there's a 'new 2G/3G simcard' in it. My t700 has been picking up the 3G networks all the time with that old 2G card (both voice and data).

I think the simcards are just the same, they only provided some extra features that lets them decide if you are allowed on the 2G/3G networks. 3G for calling is just another network like the rest, there's nothing to it that requires a special sim chip.

And now the whole thing can start over with 4G I suppose.

Seem's like we facing the same problem here..in my country,the 3G are weak at certain times..better cntct your service provider.
