01 August 2005
AUGUST 1, 2005, London - Do you love driving to the Rolling Stones or dancing to Madonna? Sony Ericsson is compiling ‘The Walkman phones 100’ - the first soundtrack of the world’s favourite songs of all time, to coincide with the launch of its new family of Walkman phones.
Whether it was the song playing at the time of your first kiss or the first song you ever bought, music lovers from across the globe will be invited to log onto http://www.walkmanphones100.com to register their top three tracks of all time and the reasons why these songs make up the soundtrack to their life. Immediately, fans will then see where their songs are placed in the overall poll, and whether or not their favourites have yet reached the top 100.
The site, powered by Lycos, goes live from 12th August for six weeks. Having registered their three songs, voters will also have the chance to win the ultimate collectable item for any serious music lover; one of the new Walkman phones complete with the world’s 100 favourite songs, as voted for by music fans worldwide on http://www.walkmanphones100.com . Furthermore, Sony Ericsson will be giving lucky runners-up a member of its new family of Walkman phones, which includes the hotly awaited debut Walkman phone, the W800*. The results of ‘The Walkman phones 100’ global vote will be released worldwide on the 28th September 2005.
Miles Flint, President of Sony Ericsson, commented: “We are incredibly excited to be introducing the first Walkman mobile phone to the market. The Sony Ericsson W800 is the first of a family of Walkman phones which are designed to bring a complete music proposition to the consumer. To mark this occasion we are now launching The Walkman Phones 100. Now consumers worldwide can vote for their favourite music and help compile the first ever poll of the worlds top 100 songs.”
“The Walkman phone allows you to store around 125 tracks and so listen to your own soundtrack to your life, wherever you are, whenever you want while staying in touch with your world. We are confident that this search for the global soundtrack of 100 songs will produce a number of surprising entries; what may well be a popular choice for people in Latin America, will be completely different for people in Australia. The results should give a fascinating insight into the type of music people from all corners of the globe associate with their lives while at the same time reaffirming the universal enjoyment all the people of the world share when listening to their favourite tunes.”
* The Sony Ericsson Walkman phone W800 is shipped with a 0.5 GB Memory Stick PRO duo™: capacity for around 125 tracks, or 10 – 12 full length CDs (MP3 files at 128 kilobits/second), which can be expanded up to 2GB. The W800 comes with quality stereo headphones and gives 30 hours of battery life in music mode (i.e. non-phone mode) or 15 hours of battery life if the phone is also being used to receive calls. Complete with a two megapixel, auto-focus camera with picture light and digital still camera interface, the Walkman phone weighs less than a 100g and can be connected to a stereo hi-fi or car stereo speakers so music can be shared with friends.

We Are The Champions’ by legendary rock band Queen is voted the World’s Favourite Song in The Walkman™ phones 100 global poll.
28 September 2005
September 28, 2005, London – Queen are the champions of the first global search for the world’s favourite music by Sony Ericsson, in which around 700,000 people voted worldwide. The Walkman phones 100 was the first soundtrack of the world’s favourite songs of all time, to coincide with the launch of Sony Ericsson’s new family of Walkman phones.
‘We are the Champions’ was released by Queen in 1977 but lives on as the world’s favourite song, with an additional two tracks* by Queen also making an appearance in The Walkman phones 100. Princess of Pop, Britney Spears, and her worldwide hit ‘Toxic’ clinched the #2 position, with seminal disco track ‘Billie Jean’ by Michael Jackson coming in at #3.
The global poll, which was conducted in 66 different countries and translated into 20 languages, illustrates how music is a universal passion, with the numerous musical styles and tastes contributing to every person’s own soundtrack to their life. With votes being collected from countries as diverse as China, Brazil, Finland, Turkey and the Philippines, the poll really is a reflection of the worldwide appeal of great music.
Dee Dutta, Corporate Vice President and Head of Marketing at Sony Ericsson commented: “Queen’s ‘We are the champions’ is a fantastic song to have made #1 in The Walkman phones 100. An anthem worldwide, both in music and sporting arenas, it conveys the passion music brings to everyone’s life as well as proving a classic rock song is truly timeless. The Walkman Phones 100 gave us a fantastic platform from which to launch the first Walkman phone and the opportunity to communicate directly with hundreds of thousands of music fans around the world.”
The site, powered by European portal provider Lycos Europe, went live on the 12th August and the poll was compiled over six weeks, with the voting closing on the 22nd September. Having registered their three songs, voters were also given the chance to win the ultimate collectable item for any serious music lover; one of the new Walkman phones complete with the world’s 100 favourite songs, as voted for by music fans worldwide on www.walkmanphones100.com . Furthermore, Sony Ericsson gave lucky runners-up a member of its new family of Walkman phones, which includes the critically acclaimed debut Walkman phone, the W800*.
www.walkmanphones100.com was part of an integrated international campaign to launch the Walkman phone W800, the first of a family of Walkman phones which enables users to listen to music, handle phone calls and take great pictures and video, all with one device and no compromise on quality. A 60 second television ‘movie’ showcases the Walkman phone’s central communication platform – ‘The Soundtrack to your Life’ - with print, outdoor and cinema advertising as well as a bespoke online and global PR presence creating a truly 360º marketing campaign to support the communication platform.

And who the hell is that artist at #9 ??

How come that some 'record-breaking' songs that were included in the Guinness Book of World Records were not included in 's list like:
1. Happy Birthday
2. White Christmas - Bing Crosby
3. ABBA's Greatest Hits - ABBA
etc.
