I mean how is IRC useful? What exactly does it do? What is 'relayed' in it?

IRC is a way to chat to people. It IS normal chat. (If you're referring to MSN, y!, aim, etc they're called messenger programs and are a different way to chat)

How you use iRC is upto you, but you log in to a network, ie dalnet, undernet, efnet (ick), starnet etc, then join a room (you can get a channel listing in most modern irc programs) and start chatting with other like minded or completely wrong individuals.

It's kinda like making a thread here then discussing it realtime.

If you're looking at downloading via irc then theres a few ways: people can send you files, and you can also use bots (things that automatically respond to messages) to send you files.

If you're on a PC, Mirc or Pirch aren't bad, if you're on a Mac, hmm who knows, ircle still around?

Just download an IRC client (like mirc or pirch, or ircle etc) and then try it out.

Given the subject is about torrents, I take it you're trying to download torrents from IRC?

torrents are totally different from irc...irc is a chat client which ppl have 'hidden' the feature of file sharing ... p2p
irc looks scary but it really isnt

torrents are based on many other p2p programs but is very flexible e.g. u cud not use kazzaa to connect to limewire ... were as torrents programs can all connect to each other meaning bittorrent...azureus...bittornado can all connect to each other...meaning faster downloads

If anyone wants a quick guide to downloading using IRC, I've written one ages ago for someone, but take it as a rough guide, written for one specific person, so its just to get the gist of it.

Yeh can be , but generally irc is where the scum of the internet hang out. It's the oldschool way of downloading. My advice would be stay away from irc lol it not that easy to get wat ur looking for anyway.
