I think (not to sure) the meaning is because Mars is “known” as a war plant and Venus as a “beautiful” plant or something like that!

I always though that it simply meant that men and women are from different planets, i.e. completely different from one another.

Mars or Ares is the God of War and to be warlike was a good thing in Greek Mythology. Similarly, Venus was the Love. Thus the saying explains the difference between the Sexes.
