They're pretty much like the earlier models but lower prices...

Check out www.apple.com/uk/ipod/ for the current range.

All regular iPods now have colour screens:

20gb = £209
60gb = £299

my ipod photo rocks

i went for 60GB because i decided bigger was better value for money at the end of the day.

pluss itunes sorts everything for you, and you just have to plug in and unplug and your done.

ipod

Over-priced and over here...

Sorry, but I've never seen the attraction. Don't get me wrong, apple are a good company with mostly good products but the ipod is not one of them.

How about a generic mp3 player instead? Better specs, better sound quality, more freedom (what's so good about itunes?) and comparitively better prices?

I'm sorry but the whole ipod thing takes me back to the 1980's when certain people thought that being seen carrying a filofax gave them some kind of prestige. Lots of companies started to make their own filofaxes and some of these products were far better than the 'real' filofax. But to many people, only the 'real' filofax would do. Anything else was a poor man's imitation.

Flame away people, I'm ready for it but my opinion (on a personal and professional level) still stands: ipods are ok, but there's much better music players out there for the taking.

Latest Ipods are pretty good mate in terms of sound and looks, depends what size you want really, don't know much about the larger models but the mini with 6gig has an improved sound processor over the 4gig model, both latest models have 18hr playback so if your going for one of those make sure it's the latest version.

They do have their drawbacks though. if your battery packs up you have to send the thing away to have it replaced, then there's Itunes, ok I suppose but I don't believe you can just put an mp3 on them, they have to be 'ituned' ! no wma support either and i have read that the standard headphones supplied are pretty useless.

The Ipod is iconic and as such, the first thing most people think of when they want to buy a hard drive mp3 player.

I have to agree with cycovision in terms of there being other players out there offering more versatility, and better value for money. I had my heart set on a 6 gig mini but after spending some time reading reviews and so on decided against it.

I ended up buying a creative zen micro (5 gig), which has plenty of space for me. the earphones that came with the unit are very good, although after reading a thread on here and then several reviews i splashed out on a set of sure ec2's . without spending ridiculous amounts of cash on headphones you would have to go a long way to improve this setup.

I know your after an ipod mate, but If I were you i would have a good look about first.

Ive now had 2 ipods, my 1st broke for no reason, it started pausing randomly, the jog protection was awfull it couldnthandle a 5 min run down hill. that was a 3rd gen 20gb. I now have a 20gb 4th gen, it works fine most of the time, but the battery life is getting worse very fast, and its started pausing alot when on hold. So far out of 3 people I know who have ipods (2 take good care of them) all have had them replaced under warrenty due to malfunction etc. Personally I would buy another one, but only because of the apple interfaces etc, the harware is pretty crap, if you want a decent mp3 player get a sony, they are smaller have 30hr + battery life.

Buying something like a 60gb is pointless in my opinion, as unless your some sort of idiot who records all their music in 320kbs as you think you notice the sound quality with headphones, your never going to fill it with music as by the time you have there will be a new and better ipod or mp3 player out which you will buy and then discard your half filled old one. Thats when the long viscious cycle begins.

Also has anyone noticed how chunkey the 60gb ipod photo is?
Check out my sales

Out of approximately 10 (inc. two I bought for myself and one I bought for my gf) people I know with iPods over the last 3 years, exactly none of them have had any problems with their iPods, even with battery life. My first iPod (now over 2 years old) is still going strong with 10 hours of battery life in a charge.

Yes, the 60gb iPod is more chunky than the others because it has a bigger capacity hard disk in it, which, surprise surprise, isn't able to be manufactured as thin as the smaller capacity hard drives!

I knwo about that, it doesnt take a genious, I just thought it was rather large.

I find my battery life going down hill, the day i got it it lasted for 12 hrs + now 3months on its lasting about 7hrs its just getting worse, and If I go to apple to change the battry theyre going to charge me £60 or $100 even thoguh you can buy the batterys for 5-10 quid new.

There is one other thing that annoys me, why did apple use this bloody coating that scratches so easily. The day i got my 2nd ipod I put it on the desk, and it got scratched without even moving it, I kept it ina rubber case for a while, and it even got scrached in that. if you put it in a dock it gets scratched, its just so annoying, I know its possible for them to put a harder coating on it, but why dont they?

I've just sold my 5th ipod, and i've had no problems with any of them, i haven't really noticed any deteriation in the battery life, and they lasted the same as the day i got each of them. I also keept on the EQ (Bass boost), Backlight (5 secs) and contrast, (about 3/4 full) And the battery on my last one (4th gen 20gb) lasted about 9 hours.

I'm going america next week so may pick up the new colour screen 20gb ones, so i can keep my pics on it.

@ lukebonathan

Yeah i've seen the 60gb photo in the apple store in london city, and they ARE big! Not really pocket size at all.

As for the scratches, i noticed how easily my chrome scratched (from taking it in and out of the apple case!). So i bought a "Skin" off:

www.trendygeek.com

It's the most discrete protection for the ipod and you can't even see it's there. One of the best accessories imho, and i recommend it to anyone!

from what you say there the battery life has degenerated, a new 20gb 4th gen should last 12 hrs ish,

I have seen those skins and almost bought one, but I had a better idea, instead of hateing the scratching why dont I make it a lot worse? so now I have got a really cool effect on the back like brushed aluminium and looks quite trendy now.

Im just wondering, but why have you had 5 ipods lol

also, how much are ipods in the US, the colour screen ones like you mentioned? If the price was right could you bring me back one?

also I know ive slaged the ipod off quite alot today, but dont get me wrong I still thinkthey are great, and its probally the only mp3 player id buy
