The BBC is reporting that a '.mobi' domain for mobile phones has been approved...
But to get one of the new domain names, you have to adopt basic standards that will allow the best viewing of the page on a mobile phone. Sounds good to me.

more on this today in this BBC article
The mobile web is about to receive the biggest shake-up in years with the start of open registration for mobile phone-specific website addresses
The general public can now register websites ending with .mobi (dotmobi) as the backers of the mobile net hope to overturn consumer apathy

I should add that as far as I know.
.mobi domains are for mobiles.
So you can't have a lets say www.ign.mobi unless it's a mobile version of the site.

yeah, good ideea BUT since mobile phones are becoming increasingly smarter (take the browsers in N93 and P990) it won't be long until phones will display the pages exactly as they are displayed on the computer (i mean with full flash file support) so the ideea of making sites strictly for mobile phones with the .mobi ending would have been great a few years ago,not now.

Yes totally agree with bugsiiy, a little too late! Now that we all have Opera browser for our phones then this 'innovative' .mobi is already redundant! I think the P990i is even shipping with Opera..

.mobi ARE for phone that can render normal pages now in my opinion.
These are for sites that are designed to fit in the phone's dimensions.
So Esato.com wont look super tiny, they make an esato.mobi domain which is designed differently for the mobile itself.
