Sony Ericsson has pulled the Z700 from its rollout plans worldwide.
First announced in March and scheduled for release this quarter, Sony Ericsson recently revealed that the Z700 would only arrive late this year or early 2003.
The delay has led to a re-evaluation of the model, said a company spokesperson. Sony Ericsson eventually found that the feature set and price point of the Z700 may not appeal to the market upon release, he added.
As a result, the product has been scratched off the roadmap.
"This is a proactive action to meet the continuously-changing market situation, and we believe the recently-announced new products (T200, T300 and T600) and the P800 multimedia phone as well as the popular T68i will make up a complete and competitive product portfolio for Sony Ericsson," said Sony Ericsson in a statement.
The Z700 looks similar to previous Sony handsets, such as the CMD-Z7. This resemblance might have played a part in the eventual cancellation, as the company is currently trying to forge its own identity, following the merger between Sony and Ericsson last October.
"2002 is still a year (when) we're harmonizing our business," a company executive told CNETAsia in June, adding that consumers will only see "100 percent Sony Ericsson" products early next year.
The Z700 was touted as a gaming phone, with entertainment content courtesy of a tie-up with Sony Pictures. Early prototypes showed off an alien-zapping game adapted from the feature film "Men in Black".
Despite offering General Packet Radio Service (GPRS), Java and Bluetooth, the Z700 provided only a 256-color display. Mobiles today, such as the SGH-T100, already sport thousands of colors.
The Z700 may have been axed, but fans can still look forward to the upcoming P800. If nothing else, the Men in Black game will be brought over to this PDA-phone, assured Sony Ericsson.
