A couple of times now I have had my phone telling me I have signal (first time 2 bars, next time maximum -1) and yet the phone said "Emergency Calls only".

Is this as simple as the signal strength indicator is lying, or is there another explanation?

I'm with Vodafone in the UK.

It's not lying. It means it has some signal, but not a vodafone signal, so it's locking onto another network--but "for emergency calls only."

I get this at my gym all the time, which is apparently a black hole, but only for my operator.

It happens when your phone is receiving a signal, but not from your operator.

Its common if your operator has poor coverage, or their signal cannot be received inside come buildings. Where i work i always get full bars coverage, but never get coverage from my own network (o2).
