How would i go about changing a number that is on vodafone pay as you go to one that is on orange pay as you go ?

i think you ring vodaphone and get a puk code and then ring up orange and tell them the code vodaphone gave you and they will transfer the number
its either pak or puk code not sure which one lol
i aint much use am i lol

its a PAC code you need for changing operators.
A PUK code is what you need when you enter the wrong pin number into your sim card 3 times

i see i knew it was one or the other
got abit  there
i was thiking of moving networks aswell
what is the deal does it take ages to transfer the number across

never done it myself in UK (done it in OZ though) but I recall some members quoting 24 hours turnaround for this so its fairly quick

7 days maxy boy and ues its a PAC! (Port Authorsing Code), thats 7 days from when you give the code to Orange,
the PAC is only valid for 30 days so you need to be quick!

well like I said I never did it myself in UK and just recalled what members here said, but I know oftel require an average of 2 days for the operators to supply a PAC code so 7 days is way over that

Right, now pay attention, 007....
I have ported a total of nine simcards with different UK networks for friends and family.
Firstly, you have the right to request your Port Authorisation Code (PAC) number, whether PAYG or if your contract is up.
There is no charge for obtaining your PAC number, except for the phone call to your network. During office hours, Orange, Vodafone and Virgin have all been able to give me a PAC number over the phone there and then. You may have to wait a few minutes while they obtain the PAC number, sometimes from a different dept.
The first time I asked Orange, they said it would arrive in the post within 48 hours, which it did.
3 asked me to call the next day (24 hours) and the O2 was supposed to contact me, also within 48 hours. When they didn't, I phoned them again..they were most apologetic and then gave me the number immediately.
Your PAC number is made up of 3 letters and 6 numbers.
Once you have your PAC number, you will have a 30 day window to port your number. If you don't, the PAC number will expire and you will then stay on the network you were trying to leave. However, you may phone the network up again and request another new PAC number, which will again be valid for 30 days.
If you are porting to a PAYG, you will need a new unregistered simcard (of your new network) pack handy as well as (obviously) your PAC number before phoning your new network.
Most networks take 5 to 10 working days, once they receive the PAC number from you, to activate the number on your new network.
Lastly, you may use the old sim on the old network right up until the day before the number is due to be ported over. They normally request you switch your phone off during the day of porting and switch it on again in the early evening...and all being well, it should be up and running.
This may seem obvious, but before there is tears, credit on your old simcard cannot be ported to your new simcard...only the number is ported, so make sure your contacts etc. have been saved onto your phone.
Phew! Hope this throws enough light on the subject...obviously, I can only speak from my own personal experiences. |

Since transferring numbers between operators like this assumes that a caller need only dial the same number no matter which operator you choose to be with, I doubt that cross border transfers will ever happen when you consider that the country international prefix is part of the dialling number even if you dont actually use it yourself. The GSM standard requires that the exchange always add that automatically if not specified.
Although I guess that statement would be incorrect if EU, for example, decides to have a single "country code" for the whole of EU which I doubt very much will happen given that the number of mobiles in EU would exceeed the current 10 digit numbering system
