A few weeks ago, just after the K750 was released by O2 in the UK, I rang them up to enquire about an upgrade price and to find out the exact date I was elligable for an upgrade. The lady said it would cost me £79, but mentioned this was negotiable when I mentioned that I could get it for £49 on a new contract!

Yesterday was the first day I could upgrade, so I rang O2 back. After the security questions the O2 guy asked what phone I wanted to upgrade to. I said the K750. He asked me why and I gave him a few reasons, including the excellent camera. He then said "Did you know that you can't send photos from this phone to other phones" and generally went on to try to dissuade me from upgrading to this phone! It goes without saying that I went on to tell him how you could send photos to other phones, MMS limits and generally have him a talking to . Anyway, he seemed pretty bamboozled by the end and said "I guess you know what you are talking to, i'll send it out to you straight away". He didn't even mention an upgrade price ... so hopefully it's free

My question is: Has anyone else had experiences with O2 staff trying to dissuade them from getting a K750?

O2 staff will always try to persuade you to 'upgrade' to a cheaper phone as there's more profit in it for them.

They will also try to get you to have a phone that they have no problem sourcing and have high numbers of stock.

I thought it was wierd... the O2 girl kept on telling me it was bulky and looked ugly ... Which i certainly don't afree with. I told her it was the one I wanted and i didn't want to pay for an upgrade - I've been with them 4 years and I got what I wanted.

Now, if i could just stop it from spontaniously crashing....

Hi Guys,

This sounds bad to me. o2 can be a mixed bag of fish... o2 Oxford branch either wanted me to upgrade my contract (o2 200) or wanted £100 for the phone. So I phoned up, o2 member services (the number on the bottom of my bill) and had absolutely no problems upgrading at all! In fact they've even doubled my number of free minutes and texts for the next 6 months and gave me the phone for free .

I think it all depends on the service provider who you are with. Originally I bought my first phone for Carphonewarehouse years ago and ended up on their own cacky o2 provider (not o2 themselves). I then got my account transferred because CPW o2 provider couldn't sell me bolt-ons at the time. No problems since then. I'm not even a heavy pay monthly user.

That's my personal experiences... Cheers,

Norm

@MWarner I don't think Mr Miles Flint would be happy if he found out O2 were officially bad-mouthing his handsets! I would have recorded the conversation and alerted Sony Ericsson to cause an almighty scandal. Its a disgrace.

I was rather concerned for SE that O2 tried to dissuade me, but it has personally saved me at least £50, so i'm not going to kick up a fuss . The guy did mention early in the conversation that he would discuss charges for the upgrade later in the phone call, but my technical bamboozlement destoyed his brains and he forgot

He also said it would take 7-10 days for me to get the phone. Today I received two emails. The first (at 4:00am) said that O2 was out of stock and I wouldn't get my phone for a bit. The second (at 7:00am) said that my order had been dispatched Next Day delivery!!!!

I guess I should be annoyed at O2's incompetance, but to be honest it has worked out very well for me so I can't really complain . The tariff is great for me (50 mins, 500 texts at £19pm), the phone is virtually unbranded - by far the best from any UK operator, I didn't have to pay anything for an upgrade despite the fact that my low usage means that I should do theoretically and my phone will arrive far faster than I expected!

I think you got the same guy i spoke to!! Said exactly the same!

Tried to put me off by telling me i would need to upgrade the memory card...

I rang up and said i want to cancel today and the girl gave me the phone for "29.99 and i stay on my same tariff at £19 per month!

Monkeys, if they had let me upgrade last week i would have accepted going onto a £30 per month contract for it, now i am over a £100 a year better off!

Just ring and say you want to cancel!!!!

Here's a theory - O2 are worried about the problems that they had with the K750i recurring again, and are trying to avert this by putting people off the handset, rather than risk losing vast numbers of customers by not ranging the handset at all.

Also, if they have limited stock, they may prefer to reserve it for new customers, according to the "brand new customers only" that is pervading our society!

Either or, but I bet it's not a coincidence...

Thats probably very true, of course they will want stock for new customers, but exisiting customers are important too, in todays phone market all networks offer cross net minutes so now that is not an issue with staying with a particular network, I could quite easily go to orange, vodaphone or t-mobile and not worry about phone bill costs as all offer cross network minutes etc.

Its not like 2-3 years ago when if your friends and gf had one network you would go with the same one to keep costs down.

Having to threaten to leave a company just to get a good deal is sometimes a bit OTT, but thats life

They asked me why too, I found it quite strange - I just said that I'd fancied it for a while and he said he'd send me one in 7-10 days, a free upgrade and I didn't have to change from my £22.50/m tarrif.

I was quite worried that I might be sent the wrong phone, since i was ill when i phoned them and it seemed a little too easy, but it came Wednesday evening and all is well
