Click on generate checksums.

Then drag the ISO file into the program windows. It will then generate the checksum for the file. Compare those numbers with the checksum numbers published with the file you downloaded. (Those files with the .md5 extension)

Generating the checksums aren't instant. At least, not in my slowpoke machine.

I'll just stick more oar in (again)!

Mandriva Linux (formally Mandrake Linux):

http://www.mandrivalinux.com/en-gb/

It is still free! If you go to the downloads section you can get the three CD set by clicking on the 'Download from public ftp mirrors' link. You don't have to join the 'Mandriva Club' either, just click on one of the mirror links and you'll get taken to the download pages.

It's also worth mentioning that you don't need all three CDs to install it, only the first. The other two CDs contain applications such as Open office and GIMP (photo editing software) but if you get all three CDs, the installer will preinstall any or all of these apps for you.

It's my favourite Linux distro, very easy to install and configure

Yippeee! I've just been donated an old Athlon machine so I've stuck Mandrake Linux on it! This is my first ever Esato post from a Linux Box Here's a couple of screenshots:

KDE Desktop:

Konqueror browser with Esato loaded:

If anyone is thinking of installing Linux and would like to see more, bigger and better screenshots first let me know

thanks for the screen shots! very nice!

i redownloaded and re-burned the ubuntu live iso, and after awhile when its loading, it sayd it failed and all, and itsaid to "check the integrety of your CD rom". what should i do? is my machiene not good enough for it or something??

oh yea, and if i put the CD in while running windows, the ubuntu splashscreen starts... then just goes away and nothing happens

Sounds more like a corrupt iso file than a problem with your comp. Did you varify the .iso file with md5summer before you burnt it?

I really would suggest that you get mandriva linux instead. Yes, I'm biased, but the reason I like it so much is that it's just so easy to install and use, and the mandriva site offers some excellent help documents for newbies (like me).

i deletd downloaded the ISO about 3 times, and got different error messages each time. maybe i will try it and see if i can get it to work. i want to install ubuntu someday too. ill download it, the when i get home, ill burn it to a cd and try it. does it have a live CD?

when i go to download mandriva, i go to the 3 CD area and all liek u said earlier, and i go to US and pick a link, then it has liek 15 more links, i just dont know what to download. thats why i liked ubuntu, it was all i one file, and just said download, not 15 links haha

You need to download the following files:

File: Mandriva-Linux-2005-Limited-Edition-Download-CD2.i586.iso 714698 KB 02/05/2005 14:57:00
File: Mandriva-Linux-2005-Limited-Edition-Download-CD3.i586.iso 712854 KB 02/05/2005 14:58:00
File: Mandriva-Linux-2005-Limited-Edition-Download-CD1.i586.iso

Looks like this on the mirrors:

They used to do a live CD but I think you have to buy it now

Yes, the installer checks your disk usage at the beginning of the process and gives you various options, such as wiping the disk clean (BE CAREFULL!) or using some of the remaining available space for a dual-boot system.

If you've already got Windows on there and you want to install Linux for a dual boot, I'd strongly recommend that you back up your important stuff first, just in case.
