How come the infra-red is turn off when attached to the camera??

This is a known bug with Firmware R2A014, I do not know if it has been fixed in later versions.

It's probably a resource problem. As soon as anything is plugged into the data port of the phone (like the Communicam or DRS-11 cable), then the infrared is switched off.
Sony Ericsson probably don't think it's a high priority problem.
