if you have an earphone port that the headset can be used on then you could either buy something similar to an iTrip or one of those Audio jacks to tape player.

Some car stereo systems have hands-free option for phones that support it (if that's what you mean). The car stereo I bought from Japan has that option but I have never used it because I don't know how. I also don't think my SE supports it. It would have been great if it worked.
resistance is futile.

On your S/E carkit wiring harness there are four wires: the yellow one is for stereo mute. When your phone is connected to the carkit and recieves / sends a call, the carkit connects the yellow wire to the black wire (which should be connected to earth).

On the wiring harness of most SONY Car Audio headunits is a Light Blue wire which, when connectd to earth, will lower the volume to a very low level but not muted completely. This is known as Attenuate or Att for short. Headunits from other manufacturers may have a MUTE function which completely mutes the sound, or the Att function. Some headunits have a mute wire, some simply have a empty hole in the connector where a wire can be fitted.

It stands to reason then that if you connect the Yellow wire from the carkit to the Light Blue headunit wire or (put a terminal on the Yellow wire and) feed it into the hole in the connector, then the carkit can control the stereo mute.

However....
Sometimes the headunit requires a much stronger earth signal than the S/E kit can provide and therefore the mute doesn't work. If this is the case with your car then PM me and i will show you the trick to get around this.

Stereo Mute is standard on: Audi, BMW, Chrysler-Jeep, Ford (US/UK/AUS), Holden/Opel/Vauxhall, Hyundai, Peugeot, Range Rover, Saab, Toyota (NZ/AUS), VW and some Volvo models.
I'm not sure about Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Skoda and Ssangyong as we don't see many of these in NZ.
Ford Falcon BA and Holden Commodore variants have a separate stereo mute plug; all the others have mute on the back of the headunit.
BMW, Mercedes and other exotics may have Phone Preparation. This is wiring for their EXPENSIVE original equipment in-car telematics. This will be of no use to you with a S/E carkit.

As for Speaker Interface (where the sound goes thru the car speakers), only Commodore VY/VZ, Falcon AU/BA, and some Audi/VW models have this as standard. You can use relays to create the same thing though.

I've fitted over 1500 carkits, any questions just ask...
