I know that IMDb don't offer a mobile/pda optimised version of the site and another site that offered that service appears to have been 'permanently terminated'. However I've found some software called IMDbPy which claims to offer some kind of mobile data access gizmo. I'm no python guru and don't really understand what it's all about so was wondering if anyone else has tried it or knows how it works?

you would need to run your own server, or access a server where IMDbPY can run.

IMDbPY will interface with IMDB and your device.

Hmmm i suspected something like that. Unfortunatly it seems you need root access to install it. Anyone know of any publicly accessible IMDbPy mirrors?

Hey folks. The author of IMDbPY sent me the following very helpful reply by email:

Hi,
I'm the author of IMDbPY; I've seen your thread about IMDb access for mobile phones in the esato.com forum.

If you've a series 60 smartphone you can try using the GUI interface developed by Tero Saarni; it uses code in alpha stage, but should work. It doesn't requires you to install anything outside of the phone. For questions about installation/usage, it's better if you cantact Tero, because I don't have such a phone.

As an alternative, if you have a shell on an computer always connected to the net with good bandwidth, you can try using the imdbpyweb program; the code is really ugly (and so is the web interface), but it's easy to configure and it doesn't requires administrator privileges, because it will open a server on a specified port (8000, by default). Unfortunately it was designed to be accessed with a modern browser (with javascript support), so it may not work on a mobile phone.

For wap terminals you can try imdbgw, but it requires you an account with CGI support.

In both cases, you don't need to be root to install the IMDbPY package: just copy the whole "imdb" directory in the same place with the script you need to run.

PS: if you start using imdbpyweb or imdbgw, please _don't_ make it publicly available, since it would almost certainly violate the IMDb terms of use.
