OK the K7i is a brilliant phone one of the best non-symbian phone that sony Ericcson have created in my opinion
...but one problem that i have encouterd is that the 42Mb memory issnt just enuff for me!!!

so i tried to implement a method where i can alternatively expand my k7i memory
after several attempts i have succesfully managed to...

here is the method that i have implemented and i thought i share it with the rest of my fellow esato members

1*) ok. in order for u to have memory expansion you will need to get urself sum webspace on the internet
web space can be bought from anywhere on the internet.
Do a quick search on google to find the cheapest available webspace and size that you are happy with.
A typical size webspace can be 50Mb-1Gig. Price may vary depending on the amount of webspace that u require.

2*) you can personalise ur webspace inorder of ur preffrence.
ur personalised webspace should be something like this eg. http://www.yourDesiredName@webspace.com
you will be given an administrator username and password eg. USERNAME: username PASSWORD: password

once u have obtained sum webspace you will need to upload ur files on to ur webspace
which u could download to ur phone at later stages eg loads of pictures, themes, mp3/mp4/amr/3gp, Java files etc

3*) you can do this using a ftp program,
you can use any ftp program if u wish but i preffer using the one that is built into internet Explorer (IE)
i will be using it in my examples in this step by step tutorial because its easy and simple and it basiclly does the job.

4*)Access ur webspace by typing in ur webspace address on the IE url box on ur desktop pc as you would
as if you were entering a normal website address but replacing the http:// with ftp://
it should look something like this eg. ftp://www.yourDesiredName@Webspace.com

Now ur ready to upload ur files u wish to store on ur webspace for download using ur K7i
you can upload anything and evrything as u desire on to ur webspace afterall its ur webspace u bought it
and what u upload is YOUR responsibility.

anyway iv layedout my webspace in exactly the way my K7i is layed out in file manager
interms of folders and subfolders
eg. Pictures, Sounds, Video, Themes, Games, Applications and Other.
how u decide to organise ur webspace is totally upto you.

5*)Once uv entered ur webspace address you will be prompted to enter the admistrator username and password
enter ur adminstrator details eg. USERNAME: username PASSWORD: password after successfully entering ur space u will see
a empty screen. ur ready to create ur personalised folders now.

6*)Right click on the empty screen scroll down to NEW> FOLDER,
then rename ur new folder to ur desired folder name eg. "Sounds".

7*)After you have renamed ur folder ur ready to put ur desired files
u wish to store on ur webspace for later download or for just backup purposes.
double click into the folder then copy and paste ur desired files into that folder
eg.i copy all my favorite Mp3/mp4 files into the "Sounds" folder and i use it as a Mp3/Mp4 mUSIC library.

repeat step (*7) for the rest of the folders eg. Pictures, Themes, Games, Applications etc
Now u have a fully backed Libaray of music themes java games etc upto the limit beyond my K7i capacity.

Your webspace is ready for use now. what i do is i delete all those high memory consuming files off my K7i
leaving my handset with the bare essential files that i always use. i leave about 20Mb free at all times,
(how much memory u leave free on ur handset is totally upto you.)
this gives me the option of
eg. downloading whateva Mp3/Mp4 tunes or Vidz i feel like getting from my webspace depending on the mood im in
and Not being restricted by the 42Mb stoarge capacity and what is available on my handset when im on the move.
(How much of Mb/Gig storage u have on ur websapce obviusly Depends on the size of webspace u innitially purchased.)

TIP.
i suggest u get urself a simcard that offres free GPRS access
as heavy downloading may be a bit expensive by sum netowrk providers.

*8)Now access ur k7i web browser pointing at ur webspace
eg. http://www.yourDesiredName@webspace.com and ur all ready to go. You can now download all ur fav Tunes, vids and pics etc
entering ur webspace and browsing through ur folders downloading and replacing files depending on ur mood.

TIP.
Heres a another handy little tip that i use that makes it more fun and easier to access my webspace.
By bookmarking and making ur webspace ur homepage
u can access ur webspace by clicking on the internet button on the right hand side of the K7i.

*9)To do this go to Connectivity> internet settings> internet profile>
scroll down to ur GPRS account you use for GPRS access> click More> Advanced> change homepage,
now change ur homepage to point to ur webspace eg. http://www.yourDesiredName@webspace.com
and rename it to whatever you wnat to call ur webspace eg. K7i Libarary. click save and now ur all done

U have now successfully created and setup ur very own k7i storage website using the storage webspace u purchased.
i hope you u enjoy ur new found storage capabilities because now u can download a tune lisen to it delete it
get a load more tunes delete it get a video etc. all on the move anywhere and evrywhere depending u have a GPRS signal
u can alter ur webspace stacking it up with data as u wish from any desktop pc by repeating steps 4-7.
how u organise ur webspace is tottaly down to u.

i would just like to mention that i tryed to keep this as simple and easy to follow
as a step by step tutorial to the best of my knowledge and capability considering those esato members who mite not
have the knowledge of website creation.

if i have made any errors in spelling pls dnt mind as its taken me up 5am in the morning and im very tired
if u have any queries dnt hesitate and i will try to help you to the best of my knowledge
alternativley if u have any suggestions of improvments pls leave ur comments
THANK YOU.

the example that i used for step *2) http://www.yourDesiredName@webspace.com

I AM NOT SUGGESTING U USE THIS LINK TO GET WEBSPACE..IT IS JUST A SIMPLE EXAMPLE!!!

you should find a webspace provider else where on the internet plz do a quick search on google or any search engin of ur choice as to locate a cheap and valuable webspace to suit ur budget.

okay 2 comments...

1st, I don't think you can get free gprs access anywhere (flat fee maybe, but expensive)

2nd, speed limmit of gprs is 20 to 30kbit/s download.
for a mp3 of 3mb you need: 15 to 20 minutes.
for a video file of 10mb???? it may take upto an hour and battery will be drained quickly.

@dargonfly

then unfortunatley for you mate we in the uk have a few network providers that offer free gprs eg.o2 im sorry to hear belgium dnt offer it.
and reguarding ur comments of download time.

i recommend that u compress ur Mp3 tunes to Mp4 as the quality is still maintained but the size of the file is dramatically reduced, hence downloading an mp4 tune is far quicker using GPRS.
AND for videos i recommend u compress them Mp4 too.

another type of compression u can use is 3gp...using softwares like xilisoft encoder, imtoo mpeg encoder...etc....by using this type of compression u can reduce the size of a song 1/10th of its original size... believe it or not i had 30 mb free space on my k700..i could load 62 full length songs...but the bad thing is u shud compromise a lot on quality......A LOT...!!!people who dont want quality but quantity can try 3gp...

@69 - That was a very detailed tutorial mate But in my case, I guess I'll just be using my plain - PC in storing excess datas thru it's hard disk via BT dongle. [addsig]

@666-999

Great idea mate! In NZ, Vodafone offer storage space for free on Vodafone Live!. Can't remember the size available but I don't think it's anything like 1 GB. Thanks for jogging my memory, I'll check it out now with a fresh perspective.

@JN

You're missing the point. 666-999's suggestion makes extra memory space accessable wherever you are, not just when your PC is less than 10m away... I dont intend to take my Compaq Notebook and B/T dongle with me everywhere on the off chance I might want some MP3's.
