Im a mac user.
I have just upgraded to Tiger which has integrated h264 capabilities !!!
and im really impressed by this new standard. the quality improvement from h263 is huge !!!!
and im wondering. WHEN will mobile makers incoorporate into phones ???
i dont know whats stopping them !
they have the technology to make it happen !!!
if they start using h264 in mobiles, then everyone will be able to record amazing quality videos with their phone !!!
and im sure they would see sales rise ... |

I think it's due to a standardization, but I think it's coming in the near future. At least Nokia has an article about on their website, http://www.nokia.com/nokia/0,,57794,00.html. |

H.264 wound not be worth the small screen of a phone...its high definition which means its best viewed on a 1500pixel plus screen

Actually H264 is not only for High-definition. It is a scalable codec, which means it is suitable for both small screen very-low datarate applications such as 3G mobile phones right up to high datarate high-def video.
From the Apple site mentioned above:
"H.264 delivers stunning quality at remarkably low data rates. Ratified as part of the MPEG-4 standard (MPEG-4 Part 10), this ultra-efficient technology gives you excellent results across a broad range of bandwidths, from 3G for mobile devices to iChat AV for video conferencing to HD for broadcast and DVD."

i still dont think the small screen would do it justice

Obviously a mobile screen won't do justice to a video encoded for 1920x1080, 25 fps. The phone wouldn't be able to play it at 7-8Mbps! But at 176x144, 10-24 fps you'll get much higher quality video at a lower data rate (50-60kbps) than is currently possible with H263.
This means less cost to GPRS or 3G downloaders, with quicker downloads and a much better quality end result.
Now, content providers can use the same codec for everything from 176x144 to 1920x1080 safe in the knowledge that the quality will the the best possible. In the past different codecs were better for different playback platforms.

davo u still think that it wont do it justice cause u dont know what were talking about !!!
h264 is completely scalable and is exactly the same thing ur viewing on ur mobile right now, but only much better quality. if u cant get that then tough!!!!
just because it will be used for high def, doesnt mean it cant be used for mobiles.
thats the beauty of this codec. and please dont say stuff like this to a vide expert. hell laugh his head off !!!! |

ok mate calm down ok...all im saying that there is a limit in quality when you've only got 176 by 144 pixels veiwable...im not arguing that the technology wont be good for mobiles...it will be great to have better quality vids with less MBs to use.
all im saying that is to get optimum quality from H.264 you need a high resolution screen...

thats the beauty of this codec.
in a few months ull be able to take a video from ur HD camera and scale a part of it into 176*144 so that it can me viewed on small screen.
i use H264 and it looks great.
if mobiles had this technology, we wouldnt have ppl wining all the time about how crap the qaulity of the video on their k700 is !!!!
its just a shame that in a site like a Esato, where more than 50% act like experts (as soon as u ask something) noone really knows or has mentioned anything about H264 !!!

even if you take vid from your HD camera and reduce them to 176 by 144 you are still limited to that amount of pixels which is ok for phones but doesnt do the original HD video any justice does it??

i dunno I think H264 in mobile phone is great!!! Coz not only u can view in the mobile.. u can transfer it to a pc and watch it.. which i normally do to save the moments... so H264 is great!! Why watch it in the mobile while u can store it in the pc and rip it a cd..
