Seeing as Japan is a non-GSM country, does this mean that there is absolutely no text messaging exchange between them and most of the rest of the world?
Email enabled devices would be the only route I guess?

You can text Vodafone JP and also DocoMo. I believe 3g calling will be available soon or is already available to Docomo subcribers from all three networks in the UK.

you have to remember that most networks in Japan dont use the SMS messaging system.
They have dedicated email addresses per mobile.
e.g. your number is 12345678 but to send you a message I need to enter your email address which may be malford@japehwapeh.com

I can confirm that texting Japan is nigh on impossible. I'm on Orange network and want to text to Vodafone. I've tried many ways and had endless conversations with Orange and Voda regarding this, and bottom line is that its not possibe.
However, with 3g, there might be a way to do it, though I havent tried it yet.

Aha, thanks hombres!
I didnt think there was a way for instant communications like SMS to be sent. Maybe, as some of you say, once 3G class communications is more widely rolled out and becomes the everyday standard then it will probably be easier... Its just that I spend quite a bit of time in countries where there is no GPRS service, and some even still have systems like ETACS.

I think there is still a character set issue between Japanese and non-Japanese handsets to be considered.
For example, I cannot use any Sony Ericsson phone that I have owned to send email to Japan. These included T68i, T600, T630, AND z600. I also tried with a Vodafone v800 UK and every time the message in the email says 'invalid character set'..... the Japanese friend who receives the email gets the same message but in Japanese.
The Sharp 902 UK model is the first phone that I have know that can receive emails from Japan and even display the Kanji and Okurigana.
I posted some photo's of it at Howards...

But there is no Japanese input so the reply must be in Romaji or using the alphabet.
I think some of the newer NEC's on 3 might support Japanese.
I have tried sending sms to Japanese Vodafone handsets with no success. But I have been successful sending emails to and receiving from Japanese handsets, PC and MAC's using a Tungsten T3 with a Japanese localiser and Iambic mail.
