nice post
I do feel naked if I go out and forget a phone, also a little helpless. I think its been a long time since I bought a phone for social status though. for example I bought my Motorola V3 when they had been out a month because even though everyone was raving about them and saying how expensive they were I didn't run out and get one. by coincidence one day someone showed me the phone and thats when I decided it was the phone for me and its now one of the longest times I have used the same phone
I do think phones such as vertu and others which are diamon encrusted or gold plated are only there for people to show their money but usually these phones are a waste of space compared with phones 1/10th their price
like most material things I think there is a phsycology of always wanting better than others. its the jones next door syndrome, and in my experience it probably affects males more than females as they seem to have a less materialistic attitude and go more for function in my opinion

Good question! For me the phone is something between a very useful thing, that makes my life easier and on the other side some sort of a pleasure for my eyes! First of all I must be convinced to have the most beautiful phone in the world, not the best. What other people hold in their hands does not interest me, unless it's a (S)E!!! It's like with women, she must be nice and have a good character, I don't have to change her every year, nor always have the youngest women! |

My phone has become a necessity. Gone are the days when owning a mobile phone was a luxury...even in India!!

When I bought this notebook the salesman had a Siemens SX1 mobile phone which I know is more expensive than my K700i and I did feel a little inadequate... until I went home and compared the phones feature for feature. I reckon I got the better deal |

i do think it is a status thing but noone bothers with it anymore....
give a rich guy a 3310 and he will freak... he wants an expensive phone not really to show off but because society expects it.
here in SA any1 who can afford R135/10 pounds subs a month can get just about any phone from V3 to d500 to s700I+ps2!!!! so its not that its a status thing.....
theres lowincome people who walk around with p900's and so on...
no use crying about some1 with a better phone than you, i think.. |

I would feel a little bit helpless without my phone, yes...
It was a statussymbol for me when I was one of the, like 20, first in Sweden to own a T630 Black. The white version came a few weeks later.

My first mobile phone in 1998 was the very modest Ericsson 688. Back then it was a status symbol, even for such a modest phone, coz I was one of the very few blokes in school who had a mobile at all.
Now, 7 phones later, I own a k700i. This phone - while it could have been a status symbol - is a necessity, even a mere commodity. I can't live without it.
It also serves as a pretend tool when I'm approached by pesky salespersons on the street. Just pretend as though I'm in the midst of a very important business deal over the phone (when actually I'm talking to no one at all), and the salesman will leave me alone. |

My wife has a Z600 (which I bought to replace her 5110) and my boss has a Motorola E398 (which I bought when he sent me out with his credit card). Other than that everyone I know is still using Black and White screen phones. Can't send any of them pictures/video clips
or sound via MMS. AAARGH!
At least here on esato everyone is up with the play! |

Bah! During the glorious old days when cell phones did not exist and neither did the concept of Mobile technology exist, people never needed mobile phones. They were perfectly happy and content with what they had at that time. It's just that technology is expanding, spreading it's vile tentacles into daily walks of life, making people more and more dependant on certain luxuries without which they were leading simple, happy, natural lives. Science is infiltrating God's pure creations and is making people ignorant in appreciating the true beauty of nature in it's total naturality and also ignorant of the daily miracles that God creates. The wild, inherent and pure natural pleasures that men used to get from hunting down their own food and fighting among themselves to death to get the women of their dreams is the true pinnacle of Social status. With the advent of science and technology, the putrid stench of human creation started to overrule the miracles of God and new Scientific Miracles started to emerge which infact began to make man more lazy, more laid back and more dependant on things that he never needed in the first place. Clothes, Telephones, televisions.... and now mobile phones... Who needs them. To hell with social status. They are satanic demons destined to suck out all the remaining meagre natural pleasures that might still be experienced. Artificial experiences aren't as rewarding. It used to take generations of humans to migrate from one place to another - Now that's the true joy of travelling. Zooming around the globe in jet planes just doesn't cut it. To sum it up, technology has done nothing more than making people lazy, spread the outreach of porn to innocent young minds, creating all sorts of radio waves in the atmosphere leading to cancer, dangling nuclear dangers over our heads and creating a higher percentage of myopes in the world. The very fact that you are now dependant on mobile phones and can't live without it proves my point.
DISCLAIMER: All of the Above is Crap. I have no control over my schizoid split personality who decided to lambast science.
As for me,
I can't live without my beloved T610 and my Fascinating P910. Long live technology. Life is so much more simpler now. Plus i love the fact that people's head's turn in awe and jealousy when i whip out my stylish p910. Elevates my social status.
In fact i wish i was born in a time where man had run out of ideas, where all possible inventions had been invented and all possible discoveries had been discovered. I feel saddened at the thought that i won't be able to see the most advanced things man creates. Things that won't ever exist in my imagination.
Cheers. My split personality apologises for posting utter nonsense in this nice thread.
