The multitude of lenses that make up an insect's eye is providing inspiration for a new generation of super-slim camera phone.

Conventional camera lenses cannot be shrunk below a few millimetres in thickness before reducing the field of view. But a compound lens, made from hundreds of tiny "micro lenses", can be made around one-tenth of the width, while retaining the same field of view and quality of image.

The image quality of such a small compound lens would be limited to about 250 by 250 pixels, or 0.06 of a megapixel. The lenses should be relatively cheap and simple to manufacture, as micro lenses can be made using existing lithographic techniques, Bräuer adds.

Camera phones have exceeded that small range.

"Camera phones have exceeded that small range."

Nah man.. it's 250x250 for each small compound lens. So, when constructed into a 10x10 matrix of lens, you get approximately 6Mpix of resolution.

so in theory you incorporate this technology into digital cameras, not phones, you could have say a 100x100 compound lens matrix. which would produce upwards of a 50 megapixel photo. now take 3 100x100 compund lenses, each one picking up the 3 different colours red blue and green and thats how you can create super high quality 50 megapixel photo.

Yeah but if thats true, there must be a catch, because they werent eager to put it in regular cameras, only camera phones, and compactness is almost as important in digicams.

The technology is in its infancy so lets see what becomes of it over time.to early to speculate, but the idea looks promising. [addsig]

i like the idea but its impossible

you would first have to work out how to read the signal sent from the retina...then decipher those signals...then process them....then create the image

yeah because water has a little bit of surface tension it .....wait ill have to draw it...its too hard to explain.
it would mainly be used to help with focusing and object like this.
