My previous Ericssons didn't have this gap between the gold antenna connector and the alloy chassis:

Would the gap in any way affect performance? Is it some kind of defect?

don't worry this is not a defect. its a limitation of manufacturing. the old 5v ericssons had the gold connector attached to the back plate... the newer ones are attached to the main board frame itself, then the back panel is just resting on top of it.

its very difficult to have zero gaps...specially in something that small. don't worry it doesn't affect reception when using the car kit. i'd even go as far as to say it creates a stronger connection between the car kit and the main board panel.

I just looked at my old T39 and noticed it too, but I never had any problems with it before...
