hello!

I have a problem with my dss-25 sync station (i have also tried the dss-20). Basically as soon as i install the drivers/plug in the station, my internet slows down and pretty much stops. Its amazing, the pages wont load the second It's plugged in. The second I take it out, they load!

similarly! the same thing happens with my MSI bluetooth dongle, meaning I cant actually use the dongle to surf the web on opera wirelessly, because the internet stops!

Im with bt broadband, and hoping someone has had the same problem and knows how to help me!

Is your broadband modem connected to your PC via USB? If so, that's the problem. When you plug your other USB devices in, such as the sync station or dongle, there isn't enough power left for the modem to work properly. It's a common and well documented problem, particularly with Windows XP.

The best solution is to buy a powered USB hub and plug the modem into that. The hub has it's own little power supply, so the modem will get as much power as it wants

Powered hubs can be bought in just about any computer shop, or online at any of the major sites (dabs.com etc.). They shouldn't cost you more than about £15gb.

Failing that, installing SP2 (if it's not installed already!) sometimes resolves the issue. Upgrading the BIOS can also resolve it on certain motherboards but bearing in mind that upgrading the BIOS can go horribly wrong and effectively kill your PC, I'd go for the powered hub option

are you sure this is the problem!

I have 5 ports, one of which is a separate pci card. The same thing happens on each one.

do you still think this is the problem? if so I'll go get a powered hub!
I thought that by sticking the devices on different ports (on different parts of the pc, the power is better distributed (than for example having a 4 port hub plugged into one usb port, and draining that.

I'm 99% sure! The problem is software related, hence why SP2 and / or a BIOS flash usually sorts it. The reason that a powered hub works is because BIOS and windows has no control whatsoever over the maximum current draw, whereas your onboard USB and PCI USB (windows sees it as onboard, effectively) are controlled by software.

Try to get a hub from a place where you can get a full refund if it doesn't work, but I'm pretty damn sure it will

I bet you've got a speedtouch or voyager modem, haven't you? Have a search on google for your problem and you'll see why I'm being so cocky!

Ok

Like I said though, try to get one from a 'decent' computer shop or a website where you can get a no-quibble full refund just in case. I'd hate to cost you money if it's not the cause of the problem.

LOL - i bought the powered hub today for 20 pounds, and the same thing happened! ARGH!

i had the hub plugged in, and the modem comming out of it. BUT i put the modem directly into the computer, and the Bluetooth dongle into the hub, and it seems to be working!

im having a bit of trouble getting opera to work properly, but hpopefully ill get that sorted!

cheers!

Phew!

Thank god for that lol

What's Opera doing, or rather not doing? Any error messages or just won't do as it's meant to do?

well its my bluetooth rather than opera i think. I have the msi dongle, and installed the software, i click create serial port, which works once. Then after a few minutes, opera stops loading pages, and the serial port from my pc isnt connected, and wont connect until a reboot!
