You can send files to another device with ir and connect to pda's or other mobile devices to give them internet access where available.

most IR phones also have BT... what IR can do, BT can do better, and more. so no point to use IR if BT is there... if not... then like they said above... file transfer... and internet etc

PDAs and laptops often got IR and not BT ...
also BT is only in high-mid-end phones today.
So for the moment IR is needed. |

IR has a pretty short range and the speed isn't amazing.

Infra Red functions like a BT, of course minus the proximity/distance of the fones when transferring/transmitting datas!
