voicestream seems to have made some improvements in their implementation of gprs -- since early June the WAP gateway has worked reliably and well.

i am now trying again from the palm. here, too, there is some improvement: using the *99***3# (where 3 is the CID number of the data account created on the phone) string the Palm (a Sony T615) can establish a connection to the gateway -- that is, I get an IP address assigned to the Palm. But the browsers and email programs don't seem to know it because they cannot establish connections to the servers or urls they seek.

So, here's what I am thinking: I have all sorts of GSM drivers on the Palm to connect with the phone. Perhaps it needs a GPRS driver (or software) to connect effectively with the GPRS gateway? Voicestream has such software for the IPAQ. Starfish, the company that makes that software, says they now have a Palm version -- though Voicestream doesn't seem to know anything about it.

Anybody here know anything about this?

It worked. The trick was to use the IP address for the Voicestream proxy, which is 216.155.175.188

It's not perfect -- that is, I can't navigate to every site (I couldn't log onto Esato, for example -- but the GPRS connection did work.

For those who are interested, the Xiino browser was definitely faster than Eudora Web.

UPDATE: My experience of nearly daily tests over this past week w/ the Voicestream GPRS (T39 to Sony T615 via BT) is that they have clearly made advances over the last few months but it's not quite there yet. Palm access via the gateway now works well but the proxy server is quite erratic: Sometimes it works smoothly both in Eudora Web and Xiino; sometimes only the fomer works; sometimes each of the browsers reports "too many redirections, contact site manager"; and, then, there are some pages (esato!) that load over CSD connections but simply won't load at all over GPRS. There is a modest speed gain over the CSD connection; but that advantage is more than outweighed by the unreliability.

Can't wait for real 3G!

I use GPRS with Vodafone and have 2 logins, a WAP login and an INTERNET login.

The first login gives me access to Vodafone's WAP Gateway and the second allows me to access the internet and the various POP servers etc. out there.

You may find that your GPRS connection has firewall blocks to the internet based servers that you want to access, it may only allow traffic through your provider's WAP Gateway.

I know that access through these points is severely monitored and restriced for the purpose they were intended for at Vodafone, due to security considerations.

well, that could be the explanation. even so, it kind of detracts from the usefulness of GPRS.
