Japan's KDDI Corp. is secretly working to build RFID readers into mobile phones and have already developed two prototypes, according to unnamed rodents inside KDDI Labs.
One of the prototypes they built can read RFID chips at short range just a few inches which can be used in the same way bar codes are used (like getting the distribution history of a package of cheese, for example).
The other prototype is relatively long range up to 10 meters away. These could be used by consumers to wirelessly grab "coupons" or any of a wide variety of other uses.
KDDI wants to develop the system and make its money by selling service based on the technology to businesses and consumers.
