The end for O2 free GPRS drawing near. |

With the rise in mobiles that are being shipped out with O2 sims, I have seen an increasing rise with mobiles that are shipped with default GPRS settings that use the free proxy. At first I couldn't believe my eyes, but it's true, quite a few phones are getting shipped already setup with the free proxy enabled.
It used to be a state secret, but not it seems everyone will be using it, even if they don't know they are. Obviously this will create a strain on O2's servers and so I imagine it won't be free for much longer. Looks like we'd best make the most of it.
I know that I won't be turning to O2's data tariffs though, they are way too expensive. I might check out Tiscali's anytime unlimited plan for £15 a month, I think they have a mobile gateway.

I don't think it was ever secret, I'm sure O2 are easily capable of knowing that people use GPRS for free.
I also don't think there is anything to suggest it will end, its like saying they will end the free SMS because too many people use it! Quite the opposite, these things attract customers to O2 PAYG & that is what they want.

Why is it sad when there is no evidence it will end?
This always happens, every few months someone says its ending but we're still here!

true, but the fact knowing that this may never happen can never be ruled out.
as the proverb goes, if one door closes, nine others open.

I think if O2 were going to charge it they would have done it by now, last time they tried it went horribly wrong & they had to refund people lots of money.
It also seems more likely they will concentrate their efforts on getting 3G services running & charged properly rather than the almost out of date GPRS
