(credit for this info goes to www.palminfocenter.com)

Sony has announced that the first MS Duo will be available on July 20th in Japan. It will be 16MB and cost aroudn $24.

This is good news for all those awaiting the P800 as its release is dependant and in all probability tied to the release of the MS Duo. The P800 is the first device that will be available to use the MS Duo. As such it would make little to no sense for Sony to release Duo more than a few weeks before the P800, as there will be nobody buying them (the Duos) because there will be no devices for them until the P800 hits store shelves.

This info makes it seem as if an early august release for the P800 is very probable. I for one hope it is!

P800 for ever!! (or at least until the next latest greatest thing comes along )

All Memory Stick devices will be able to use MS Duo with an adapter. People will probably buy MS Duo's for their cameras (since they are smaller then MS) and use a single adapter to insert it into the device.

P800 won't be out for a while. I don't see how MS Duo can speed up its release.

That does not make sense....Why would be people buy a more expensive MS Duo with less memory to replace a normal memory stick????....If your device takes the regular MS there's absolutely no reason for you to use the DUO version.

MS Duo's are smaller than MS and they will be compatible with future Sony products. Imagine you buy a lot of Memory Sticks and then your next state-of-the-art Sony camera supports only MS Duo's.

Don't get me wrong, I wasn't saying that people SHOULD buy MS Duo's instead of MS's. I was just saying that they CAN and that's why the MS Duo is out, not because the P800 is just around the corner. It isn't...

Btw, is it just me or is it extremely stupid for Sony to invent a whole new proprietary expansion format? What about all the people who already bought old Memory Sticks. Should they just throw them away when they are buying a new Sony device? And, what's wrong with SD, MMC, ...?

I wondered the same thing, the Duo is such a similar size to the SD and MMC, so why? Surely the P800 size would not have increased that much if they used a full size MS

I think the release of MS Duo is not related to the release of the P800, instead it's released in conjuction with the the i-shot mova D25li phone that will be released by NTT Docomo in Japan on July 15th

I don't think it's bad that Sony made the Duo... some smaller devices would be too bulky if they used the regular memstick, like the P800... or newer MP3/audio players, data watches, etc... at least the Duo is backwards compatible with devies that use the regular memstick.

Larger devices will benefit from larger capacities at lower prices, so if I don't own a Duo device...say I only own a Clie, I get cheaper memsticks... 128MB for less than $100. If I owned a Clie and a P800, I could just get the 64MB Duo stick, and swap data between my Clie and phone... or have a regular 128MB for my Clie, and just use the Duo stick to transfer large files to and from my Clie, PC, and phone!

I think it's a great format. If you have a Handycam, Cybershot or Mavica... or any other Sony product, you can you the Duo on any of them that use regular memsticks.

According to their projected progress chart, regular memsticks will hit a max of 4GB, while the Duo will hit 1GB. So there will still be a large demand for the regular memstick, specially in the PDA markets. The Duo is targetted at markets that put a premium on size, over capacity.
