Hi there! Firmware is nothing but the software used by the phone. The phone has to start up, make calls and do all such stuff. All these are controlled by the firmware.

The firmware is basically the software that runs your phone. All phones have it...so it is fairly important. SE will update the firmware of your phone every so often to improve bugs or to add features. You will be able to update your firmware by going to a SE service center. Although depending on what phone you have e.g.P900/P910, K700 you can update your firmware over the interent.
Hope that helps! |

And hence, firmware is important! Because, without it, the phone won't work! :-D Btw welcome to Esato!

Is it neccessary to update it? Can the phone still work without being updated? I want to get the sony ericsson k700i but I've heard with the new firmware I won't be able to make my own ringtones

If ain't broke don't fix it!
Kidding! No its not absolutely necessary to update the firmware, but advisable. There are ways around the restrictions you have in mind, my suggestion is search for those solutions in this forum.

Upgradation is only necessary if you face any problems caused due to a bug in the current version of the firmware. Upgradation is not compulsory. Its optional. If you're happy with your current firmware, there's no need for upgrading it.

Check out some of the K700 related threads to get details about its firmware, bugs and most common problems. I hope all those will help a lot. ;-) Good luck!

If your 100% happy with the way your phone runs then you don't really need to bother doing anything with the firmware but newer versions of firmware tend to fix bugs and improve performance.
One of the main reasons to upgrade firmware to unbrand a phone (remove menus and customzations on the phone which were programmed by your network provider), which is why I updated the firmware, and to get rid of bugs.
If your phone is still under warranty, you can get it upgraded for free by a SE Service Center which you might want to take advantage of but otherwise, if your happy with your phone, leave it. |

My phone relocks everytime i update the FW using the SE support and people here in the forums and my friends says that once it's unlocked, it stays unlocked. Another strange thing is my organizer software wasn't updated at all. My the new version should be R3A02, according to SE website, but i still get R3A04 even if i insert the right sim.
Has anyone ecnoutered this same problem? I will never update my FW again after i unlock my phone after this experience. |

Yes, this new locking feature is a little naughty really. SE should not touch the sim locks as it is the user who has the right to unlock. I may suggest that you take your phone to someone who is able read out the SP code. Then you may enter it in <**< |

This will be the 2nd time that i will unlock my phone and even the store is baffled on why the lock was resetted back. So, does this mean that SE update service relocks all unlocked phones already? |

I am not sure - its a shame i dont have a p-series phone anymore - i would have loved to have tested this.
I really do suggest you get the person who unlocks your phone to give you the sp code as then you should just be able to enter it in when/if you need it. |

@siony - About the firmware ugrade, there are a 101 answers to this very simple 'Q' mate Some truly were satisfied when they have upgraded their fones - say, K7 in this instance and some were left with a 'dead' set/unit after which. But for me, I am not taking the risk (though probability is very remote . . . ). If you are quite saitisfied by charging your fone almost on a daily basis, and sees that white thing flashing on the screen of your k7 from time to time . . . then might as well just leave it at that mate! I am talking of a 'stock' firmware here pal - R2AA . . . Good Luck!
@cheese whiz - I think the correct word is - 'upgrading' and not 'upgradation' mate . . .
