hi. you'll need full gprs to access pop3 mail. however, if you have your mail account with vsnl then you'll be able to receive mail only. Vsnl blocks smtp access (i.e. sending mail) if you don't dial up through their number

Finally got clarity on the GPRS access thing from Orange. The Orange World (Rs 99 per month) is just a WAP and MMS service. No POP mail, or internet access possible with this. For those, I'll have to sign up for the Orange Access service (Rs 499 !!! per month + Rs 0.5 per 10kb over 100 MB).

Roaming on GPRS (Orange World and Access) is available with selected partners in selected countries, but the good news is that roaming is free ... at least for now.

Well I guess I'll stay with Orange World for now.

Orange access allows free international roaming? Correct? For 500 rupees or about 10usd?

The Orange callcenter person told me that right now their GPRS roaming (on OrangeWorld) is absolutley 'free', since this is some trial/ test stage. The catch is that the service is available in very few circles where Hutch/Orange has their own service, or where they have some close partners. For example in Singapore it works only with StarHub.

Not sure which service provider in UK, but the person did mention that they have a partner in UK. You may have to call and check. I think the list of partners is also somewhere on their website, but I have not seen it yet.
