sim locking in US - vs and at&t |

Is it pretty safe to assume that the T-68 and other new GSM phones that AT&T and Voicestream will offer in the US will be SIM locked when you purchase from them? I've never heard if carriers ever sell their phones so that you'd be able to use them on other networks... |

Your assumption is correct. ATT sells the phone for $200, and VS for $250, they can offer the phone at a lower price because they lock you down in their network for at least a year, and I guess they make up for the cost within that time. |

yeah, I've got ATT T68 and it was locked. Just sent it to Las Vegas to get unlocked...should return Fri or Sat and I can try Voicestream SIM and coverage. This is my first GSM phone so I am excited to discover differences in coverage areas and quality. I found that South LSD sucks as does Roger's Park and Roscoe Village..at least on ATT. We'll see how good VS is. Next time, I'll pay upfront for an unlocked phone and save myself the hassle. |

So for now you're just dealing with the Chicago-area home calling area issue? I travel too much to only have that small service area right now, so I'm gunna give Voicestream a go at the end of this month. I'll be testing out their coverage around Chicago and I'll post it when I figure it out...
btw....how much did it cost you to unlock your phone/where did you send it to?

new at&t handsets now are harder to unlock than before.
make sure your NCK is not set to zero [0]
if it is, it's gonna be hard for anybody to unlock your phone.
even robb and k3ee admitted it. |

Mindreader, you don't have to wait for 3months to have your phone unlocked by T-Mobile/Voicestream...some guys i knew even had their phones unlocked only about 1day after they got it...just try emailing SIMunlock with your details and i'm pretty sure they'll give you the unlock code within 24hours... |

Mindreader, if you have an unlocked phone, you don't necessarily need to insert a different SIM card to make sure it is really unlocked. you can just press a few buttons and it will show up if the phone is completely unlocked or not...but if you really want to buy a different SIM card, then buy one from AT&T, it's that simple. |

does anyone know what the "second" pin number is for, and what it is by default ? some things ask me for PIN 2 is there a default setting for this ? is it a sim issue or a phone issue ? |
