hello everyone. i have noticed a lot of people asking about what type of sim do they need to use with a 3G phone. This is confirmed in the UK but i dont know outside... Although Voda i would expect to be the same in each opco.

Well on 3 u will HAVE to have a USIM. 3 have also locked their sims so that u can ONLY use them in a 3 phone and not a 2G phone.

Vodafone use their normal sim (SIM2 With TOOLKIT). These sims work in both 2G and 3G handsets with no problems.

Orange are a bit strange. They say u can use your normal sim, but when i enquired they told me i needed to upgrade my sim to a new universal sim (USIM).

And putting a 2G sim in a 3G phone wont damage the phone or the sim in ANY way at ALL!

hope this clarifies things a little.

dont know who you asked in Orange voda_jon but they are wrong, i use a Z1010 with a normal 2g sim, obvisouly i cant do video calling or browse the web at 384kbs, but i can use mms and gprs.

and i can also use a USIM in my K700i no probs.

again it wont do video calling but it will do all the k700 does.

but i suppose it depends on network set up etc. I will give the person a slap next time i see them... lol.

@voda_jon: One question, do you think that we will be able to do the normal things with a 3G phone, if we flash it with a normal(sim-free) fw or something?

@fatreg: I think voda_jon said that the Orange guys say that you can use it.

Its all very interesting...its almost certainly a marketing ploy by orange to get more money in, tbh i would have expected it from vodafone, but they are the only ones behaving themselves over it!

well yeah it shouldnt be any limitation of the sim/phone combo unless a K700i etc cant cope with a 128k sim??

i know the Orange USIM have some very very bizarre addressing structure, allowing one and 3 number etc.

i heard that a V800 wont work with a normal 2g sim? or is that cod sh*t?

hmmmm

i myself was suprised by this but i suppose it costs money to distribute new USIMS to every customer and every shop. An we all know voda dont like spending their own money unless its gonna make even more money for them. which if they can do it using their older sims then why bother spending more money?

they will probably slowly introduce them as stock of the SIM2TOOLKIT ones run out.

The V800 WILL work with a 2G sim... I am my normal sim (which is about 3yrs old) in my v800 with no problems...

upgrade you sim?

well yeah should you upgrade to a 3g phone youll need to upgrade you sim to a USIM but there is no cost involved,

surely you need to change sims if your changing from a 2g handset to a 3g handset on voda?

theres no need to change the sim on a 3G upgrade with voda unless u got an old SIM2 (which we stopped using about 4yrs ago). I am using a 3yr old 2G sim in my v800 with no probs.... we only add the video soc to a customers account and thats it, all upgraded and ready to go.

AND YAY! 200 posts!

ahhh intresting voda_jon,

i cant use the 3g services with a 2g sim in a 3g phone,

what is it with voda now upgrading sims with every new phone?

surely there must people out there using like 16k SIMS in K700/S700 etc?

they will be loving the addressing to those sims!

the retail stores r told to try an upgrade every sim that comes into store. but this isnt always possible. A lot of customers dont want their sims changed as they think they will lose their numbers which they wont we transfer them free of charge.

We have used many different colours for sims like:

Blue for Talkland and first gen vodafone cards, black and then red with a white stripe and then red with voda sign on it.

we still have customers using blue sims but they r a small minority. The only forcing we have done on sim upgrades was wen the nokia 8310/6510 came out they wouldnt work with the SIM2 variety so we had to text every customer asking them to go into a store for a sim upgrade to a SIM2 with TOOLKIT. which worked ok. Since then we dont force anyone to change and they seem to be ok with that.

The 2G sim is orange? or voda? if u cant video call with a 2G sim on voda u havent got either a signal or the video SOC on ur account.

Can you put a Virgin sim in any 3G phone?
Reason I ask is my dad wants a phone but hardly uses it at all, so is not interested in paying much money. You can payg 3 for £20 so that'd do the trick nicely.
