pricely sdk for P800. how to put pressure on sonyericsson ?? |

Hi guys,
I'm pretty much interested in this quite nice P800 which is coming up in some days / weeks. As stated elsewhere, a drawback (the only one ?) is the non existence of apps and adapted softwares that have made the success of Palm handhelds.
And the SDK is available on the Ericsson Mobility World site, but you have to pay a damned 500€ to get "Basic services" + 995 € to get the SDK. BTW I've read that Nokia gives the 7650 SDK for free...
Can messages on this forum make SE change its mind ? What pressure can we put on them to get this SDK at 0€ (or reasonable cost for a developer in his garage to create small but nice apps) ?
All ideas are welcomed...
Have a nice waiting time... |

mostly true..
cause, i don't think se would give the emulator for free, since they're charging for the sdk.

I have spoken to SE mobility world people about getting a free copy of the SDK and or a heavily discounted educational version (i am a student). They had a numbe rof reasons why they woudlnt make one available, unfortunatly i dont remember them heheeh it was a month ago or so. The main reason I think is that They built thier SDK using codewarrior as a base and that is a comercial product they cant just give away for free. In any case the free java sdk is what i think i will start looking into for my learning. It is about tiem i learned java, and who knows if i write a good java app i may be able to sell it to a carrier and make some money .... ahahahahah ya right! neway go for the free java and emulators cus I dont think the SDK mis gunna be included for free with the phone. they made it pretty clear they werent giving it out for less than $1000
P800 all the way baby! |

Well, I doubt that the SDK might come with the phone.
Otherwise, as most developers will buy the phone (and then have the SDK), why would they sell the SDK ??
They have definitely to offer it for free if they want to get apps. The Java SDK is not enough, I think you can do less... Otherwise, one has to buy it, and to offer it as a cracked sw on a russian site... But that's not a good way to do business and to push mobile Internet services and Apps...
The post with the SDK included is dated : 2002-07-07 20:47 the link is http://www.esato.com/board/viewtopic.php?topic=7946&forum=2#post99877 from jplacson

I agree.
Actually, when I read the P800 specs I decided to buy one as soon as possible. But, when I heard that I have to pay 1500$ to get the SDK, I changed my mind and now I think I'll just get a Nokia 7650. I can develop my own applications for it (since it has a free SDK), and those apps will be able to run on future Siemens and Panasonic smartphones (since they lincensed Series 60 Platform).
P800 sounds like a great phone, but it looks like there will be no freeware and shareware apps for, and other apps and games will just be too expensive (because developers and companies have to get back the money they spent on the SDK and the rest of SE's crap). I'd rather buy a Pocket PC or Palm OS based PDA because they already have loads of apps for them.
Too bad that SE doesn't see this. I think they blew it. Nokia now has a lot bigger market share than SE, and it remain so even after the P800 comes out.

i don't need and will never use SDK but i will get the p800 still. i will use all the p800's features but nevermind the SDK thingy. just because the p800 does not have this and the 7650 has it i will not get the latter. p800 out weighs the 7650 in everything important and that most mobiles users need. the p800's pros is much more than the cons like me, i need tri-band and the 7650 is ugly and too big for me.

The Symbian OS7 that comes with the P800 takes C++ and Java based SW. So, the Java and C++ SDKs come with the phone. (Or so their press release stated)
I think the same goes for the 7650. Besides, it's not SE that should be giving out SDKs, it's Symbian.
Just look around to see if Symbian has free or cheap SDKs for their new OS7 UIQ. It's open source so developing apps for it is open to everyone.
The SE SDK program is a diff story... the "Basic" & "Advanced" service you get for your 500++ Euros includes seminars, tech data on SE products, etc... the higher service gets even hardware testers I think.
If it's just for app dev, Symbian is the one in charge of the SDKs for their OS... it would be the same as asking Compaq to give out SDKs for their Presario series running WinXP... you don't ask Compaq, you go to MS since it's their OS running in the machine.
Hope this helps! Looking forward to seeing you app for the P800!!! |
