I dont see anything special about this Motorola V3 that has so much hype.I know it has slim-line look with a quality metal built structure but looks of a phone is last on my list. This phone DOESNT have a built-in radio, video capture, megapixel cam,3D games,Symbian. Only 5MB memory!Thats not impressive.I would rather be happier with a K700i ;-) Whats your views?

we've had this discussion before in the main V3 discussion thread but...
basically it comes down to a few of factors for me
1. style - it certainly looks the biz
2. nostalgia - many of had the Motorola Startacs and this brings back some good memories
3. I don't use cams on mobile phones that much and almost never use video cam on the phone so that function missing doesn't bother me and therefore I don't need so much memory
4. I also don't listen to music from my phone so again I don't need so much memory
5. The phonebook isn't that great but the rest of what is there is very usable and customisable to my preferences
I no longer have my K700 but I will be keeping the V3 for a very long time

I too was decidedly underwhelmed by the V3 when I used one for a day a few weeks ago.
For a start, all this hoopla about it being fully metal is a load of rubbish, there's only two metal panels on the entire thing! The whole bottom section is cheap-feeling plastic with paint that scratches off very easily. The phone I was using was barely a few weeks old and already looked worn.
The user interface is excruciatingly slow, especially when loading pictures. Why?? Especially since it has an nVidia graphics chip inside...
The thing's slower than many Symbian phones I've used.
And writing texts on the keypad is a mission. Yes, the keypad looks exellent, but I'd rather be able to write faster than 2 words per minute thanks.
Basically the phone for me was a complete letdown. It looks sexy as, but the cheap plastic and lack of actual metal (one of the main selling points) ruins that whole impression.
I was expecting something that reminded me of my well loved Nokia 8850, but all I got was a load of hot air. |

Thanks for your replies.A good feature of this phone is the 262K screen, but for anybody that likes phones with lots of cool features, then this phone is not to be considered buying.

Its not as much of a technology symbol as it is a fashion accessory.

Sorry, got confused. It is in fact a version of the ATi Imageon graphics accelerator (3200) that's in the V3. The V300/500/600 all use the ATi Imageon 2250, and its 3G phones (E1000, C975/980 etc) all use the nVidia GoForce 4000 graphics accelerator.
The one thing I do like about the latest Motorola handsets is the anti-aliased text, which is a feature of the top-end mobile graphics accelerator chips.
I personally can't wait for the hardware 3D chips (nVidia GoForce 4500 etc) to start appearing in handsets, especially Symbian based ones. Full hardware acceleration of OpenGL ES... mmm. Anyone remember the PowerVR mobile 3D chips that have been in development for years and were shown in operation running Quake etc at trade expos ages ago? |

I have the phone and love it. It's small, light and good looking.
Texting is very simple once you get used to it.
If I want music I have an iPod.
If I want photos I have a proper digital camera.
Who, other than school kids wants video on a phone??? Could never see the point of that.
Maybe the V3 appeals to more adult users, not the student types who want the Nokia-esque coloured fascias and multi tasking mp3 playing gadgets. A phone is not likely to be a decent camera in the near future. If I was going to an occasion no way would I leave my camera at home because I have one on my phone. I like to see a bit of detail on my pictures.
I wanted a phone that I could make calls from. That's it. That's what the V3 does and it looks good while it's doing it. I didn't pay anything for it so I consider it a good deal. If it doesn't suit you, don't buy it. |

Bought this phone in India (B'lore) in November for 34K (with the HS-810 BT headset included).
As mentioned above, dont buy a V3 if you're looking for the latest technology. The V3 doesnt have EGDE, Megapixel camera and a whole lot of other things. The memory can get filled up pretty soon and there are a few issues with the user interface (its not lightening fast, phonebook is cumbersome etc).
What the V3 has going for it is excellent design. If something as mundane as a phone can be considered sexy, then this phone is! Also, reception on this phone is amazing and the mic and speakers are very good. BT works great. And the internal screen is very bright and vivid, although it has been installed the wrong way (narrow lateral viewing angle).
There's no doubt that this phone will be obsolete in a few months. But, in my opinion the style shouldnt fade for a long time. If Moto hadn't released it, I would have had to buy a Nokia 8890 because that's the only other handset I can think of in the same category. What remains to be seen is if the metal and plastic (yes, the bottom of the phone is not metal!) construction can stand the test of time. |
