The New Jersey Assembly is considering a controversial new law restricting the use of cell phone cameras.

It would require all of them to be equipped with sound or light signals. Supporters say it would warn subjects their photos were being taken.

Opponents say the law is not enforceable, and is likely to be ignored by cell phone manufacturers.

and why (as I always ask) only mobile phones? you can get 5mp digital cameras which take heaps better pictures in the size (or smaller) than a mobile phone and so can be used just as inconspicuously

Not really masseur....camera's can be seen and and identified as such but mobiles are very inconspicuous, and can be as you may very well know misused quite effectively without anyone realising.

I disagree, my Sony DSC-T1 fits fairly neatly into my palm and I can easily take a pic with no one knowing and sometimes do though not for the purpose you might think. just in quiet places or where I might feel embarrased to be taking a picture and everyone looking at me etc

and these days probably more phones than not have cameras so most people except there to be a camera on the phone

I'm sorry mate but i disagree....With camera's you cannot just point a cam at someone and pretend your doing something else!...You could however easily get away with doing that on a mobile as the subject your photographing may think your mearly useing your phone. [addsig]

I guess im kinda split here, i like to use my phone to take pic's but would feel a little stupid with everyone turning around and knowing i've just taken a pic of... lets say a nice car.

On the other hand its good because you'd be aware of people taken pic's of yourself and even your children (as we all know there are some very sick people out there).

I actually think it's the other way around.
When I still had my Z600 I sometimes had to put it in peculiar positiions to be able to read the screen outside, and more often than not people think you're taking a picture.

The reason for the phone-cam-paranoia imho lies in the amount of publicity that the (mis)use and the abundancy of phone cameras have had.

Granted, phone cams are much more affordable and accessible to everybody and therefore perhaps more ubiquitous (Spelling) than high res tiny 'spy'cams.

Another thing I think may play a role is that the rise of the phone-cam comes more or less at the same time as a massive change of attitude towards being generally more rude and disrespectful and inconsiderate than people were perhaps a decade ago. As such, it is easy for the phone cam to become known as the instrument of the vulgar (and worse) of society.

I'm trailing off a bit though..

Back to my point: my experience is that people expect other people to abuse their phone cams. They do not expect one to be busy trying to read an innocent text message.

It's probably mostly donw to negatiove publicity imho.

After all.... if I really wanted to spy on somebody or take inappropriate pictures.... I wuldn't bother with my large and clumsy phone. I got something far more suitable for the job, that even has a silent mode

Ohhh vlamm's a spy!!

@axxxr:
quite honestly cameras of high quality have been getting smaller and smaller, while phones have been as well you won't find a small camera phone with any decent quality.

As mass' pointed out, you can have a camera in your palm taking pictures discretely, and no one is the wiser. If I was using my digital SLR then sure it wouldn't be inconspicuous for someone to point and say "Hey you, with the large thing in your hand, put that down, I don't want any pictures" .. yet with a creditcard sized 4 or 5 mp camera, it just doens't scream out "this is a camera i'm taking a picture"

...

Phones have come under a spotlight in some ways because of the ways they've been abused but theres no reason that a law shouldnt cover other digital imaging devices, enthusiast digital camers (ie those not big, bulky and obviously a camera) handheld pdas with built in cams, cam phones etc.

Heck they only need to make a sound like the S700i and everyone will know you've snapped a shot ;D

Sorry axxxr, but i disagree with you aswell, and agree with vlamm and masseur.

but i do see your point though, especially with more modern phones, however the same can be done with cams! [addsig]

I'm with axxxr.

On the train each day I'm always covering my little K700's lens on the back just in case some believes that I'm taking a picture of them while playing games.
(more common cutesy than paranoia)

If I pulled my similar size Sony DSC-P120 digital camera I'm sure if spotted people would wonder why.

Its a knee-jerk reaction by an ill informed, panicky, unreasonable few...the hysteria created by a tiny minority, as usual, gets the most publicity and will probably become law.
