From what I do know, the IR port (As well as the strength of the signal) has been only designed for data communication across a very short distance.

Even if the IR beam was indeed more powerful, one wouldn't be able to program the IR transmitter to send a specific sequence of commands (to control your TV, DVD etc.) via Java. Java is the only way to program the Txxx series of phones and sadly, the implementation of Java on these phones doesn't allow you to control the IR port!

Only a Symbian or Windows powered phone would allow a programmer to do such stuff. Sony "could" release software upgrades that allow you to control your DVD/TV etc. from a few centimetres, but the efforts required in creating such an application wouldn't be worth it!

Cheers!

It would be easily possible if programs for the Kxxx and Txxx were written in C/C++. That's why Nokia users can control their TV's and other appliances via their phones

The Java runtime for the Txxx does not allow a programmer to effectively interact with the hardware. The Kxxx series of phones are supposed to possess a more powerful set of Java libraries, but I'm now quite sure if they're of any use for IR.

Cheers!

The only application for controlling televisions, dvd players, etc from a SE handset, that I have heard of, is the remote control application, from Psiloc, for the Pxxx series. It should be noted that this application suffers from the poor range of the Pxxx series' infrared ports.

Symbian phones possess additional Java libraries that enable the IR (amongst other devices) to be controlled through code. Needless to say, these libraries are not available on non Symbian phones!
